my non-turbo V70 sounds like a jet airplane

Post by blankenship » Sat Jun 01, 2019 7:06 pm

For the past few months my '98 V70 (non-turbo) has been making a pretty wild noise, usually shortly after start-up at low-speed or occasionally at idle. It's like a spooling up/down kind of high whine.

I'm linking an audio file, recorded this morning a few seconds after start-up and driving about 10 feet. It lasted for 60 seconds, the last 15 seconds of which I'm posting here.

Sound is actually *loud* and turns heads in parking lots or in the morning when I head out on my commute. Sounds like it's coming from underneath the battery.

Can anyone help with diagnosis and repair?

99% chance that is the air pump, and it is full of water due to a bad SAS valve. Look down low between the battery and the radiator. Unplug the pump (sets a code) and see if it still happens. Keep in mind the car usually has to be moving to engage the air pump.

Options are to replace the pump and SAS valve (expensive, certainly over $100) or get rid of SAS altogether (couple bucks).

Does it ever make this sound at stoplights?

You can confirm the presence of SAS by the tube running behind you’re engine with a domed valve connection.

Erik nailed it above, as usual.

Google search “supplemental air System Volvo 850” returns.....

Sounds like SAS pump to me as well. Had one go on an old Jetta...

I cannot stand the SAS System on these cars... My 98 GLT had the pump fail and I am just waiting until I can figure out how to block it all off and then I am doing the delete either by way of the ECU diode, or ARD tuning. That is certainly what you have going on. Mine sounded the same way until I drilled a hole in the bottom and drained out the rusty water.

Volvo has been sending out airborne bulletins for years trying to inform people of what that sound is - you just have to be aware..

Disconnected the pump and all is quiet :)
I now patiently await the P0410 code. hahaha
Anything wrong with me just leaving all as-is for now and then doing the $2 diode fix at my leisure sometime between now and my next DEQ/smog test?

PS: Does this post over on Swedespeed check out, as far as what all can be removed?

All sounds like a good plan, assuming you can pass smog with everything deleted (i.e. assuming they won't go looking for the equipment).

Swedespeed info is correct, you only need to keep the relay and the solenoid, and they must be connected.

Here in Portland they just plug into the OBD port and put a sniffer up the exhaust. Never had 'em pop the hood.
Would deleting the system effect emissions significantly?

Smog is state dependent so don't follow generic posts about 'this will pass smog' to closely

In CA, they inspect for tampering which is an instant fail. Removing anything == tampering, unless you have a CARB approval to do so

The SAS system pumps extra air in during cold startup, keeping it clean and heating up the cat quickly - after warmup it has no impact on emissions, except at stop lights.
