2009 XC90 3.2 Serpentine belt

Help, Advice, Owners' Discussion and DIY Tutorials on Volvo XC90s. The XC90 proved to be very popular, and very good for Volvo's sales numbers, since its introduction in model year 2003 (North America).

2009 XC90 3.2 Serpentine belt

Post by woodg » Tue Jun 04, 2019 5:34 pm

Has anyone changed the serpentine belt on the 3.2 engine? I'm having to replace the AC compressor and the belt has some cracks. I'm also replacing the idler and tensioner pulleys while I've got it apart.

The belt is a bear to replace. The power steering pump has to come off to change it. I'm almost there but there is one last bolt that I can see, but can't reach because of the lines from the ABS unit. I've tried extensions and universal joints, but still can't get on it to turn it.

Has anyone done this and if so any suggestions? There is precious little information in the way of drawings and videos that I have been able to find. Lot's of stuff for the 2.5 engines, but almost nothing on the 3.2.

Thanks.

This may help some, it's on a Landrover that uses the engine:

Thanks. I had seen that one, but it appears that the Land Rover has the ABS in a different place. I'll upload some pics later to show you what I'm talking about.

My 3 month old grandson could reach the bolt that I'm having trouble with if he could turn it, but normal adult human beings will have a tough time fitting through the openings or bending in the right places to reach the last bolt.....lol. Then there will be the issue of getting the bolt back in.

it says to remove the two bottom bolts on the ABS bracket, then loosen the center bolt in the middle (on the next page) not more than 4 turns. Maybe there's enough movement of the ABS unit to get clearance to the ps pump bolt?

One tip I have for threading a bolt back in a tight space is to put a little square of tissue paper over the open end of the socket, then push the bolt head in. It holds pretty good.

This is for the LR2 also but it has a lot of useful tips

http://www.freel2.com/forum/topic33363.html

When you put everything back together the spring that runs the water pump needs to get inserted back into the correct location

Green Arrows
One end of the spring will interface with the plastic bracket at the one of the upper green arrows
The opposite end of the spring will interface with the water pump in the hole shown by the lower green arrow

If you are not careful the spring will end up by the red arrow location and it will make an annoying clicking sound

Good thought, but not near enough room to get to the bolt. My next step is to remove the LF wheel and see if I can get to it from there.
Here are a couple of pictures.

Not pretty but I think you get the idea.
