Motor mounts top and bottom issues

Post by IslandV70 » Wed Jun 05, 2019 6:53 am

I started out with a worn out original top mount. I got a new one with urethane bushings. It worked great if you could stand the horrendous vibration at idle. I could not. I sent that back and got the OEM style Hutchinson mount. Now I am back to too loose :( You can see a mark on the mount that looks like it is allowing about an inch of movement.
What to do..................
I decided that the bottom mount would be a good start to solve this issue. It also keeps the engine from rotating and is only about $24 or so. I got one from FCP and installed it the other day. It is a definite improvement over the original, I think I am almost there.
I bought rubber molding compound from Amazon that is relatively soft:
As soon as I can be without the car for a day I am going to use this to fill in the gaps on the Hutchinson mount. This stuff is 30 durometer hardness and urethane is more like 60-80. My hope is this will be a bit stiffer without vibrating the whole car.
Short version is if you need a new top mount, I think odds are very high you need a bottom one too. One one wears out all the force goes to the other one, which probably fails soon after.

I don,t see pics.. An inch a little much, but the upper mount is not an actual mount, but rather a 'damper' mount (or torque mount). The engine moves quite a bit back and forth under acceleration, these torque mounts only limit this movement. If these mounts were to be rigid, I guess the actual mounts could take the hit and suffer in the long term.
