Can I put the B5254T motor into my XC90 that originally came with a B5254T2?

Help, Advice, Owners' Discussion and DIY Tutorials on Volvo XC90s. The XC90 proved to be very popular, and very good for Volvo's sales numbers, since its introduction in model year 2003 (North America).

Can I put the B5254T motor into my XC90 that originally came with a B5254T2?

Post by 3kgtaddict213 » Wed Jun 05, 2019 4:05 pm

So I just picked up a 2006 XC90 and got the "no oil pressure stop engine immediately" warning, tried to limp it off the freeway and POP I believe I spun a rod bearing ... got a motor at the junkyard from an S60 (2008 I believe). The donor motor is a B5254T but my XC90 came with a B5254T2.. can I just drop the B5254T in and call it a day? I know the B5254T2 has VVT and the B5254T doesn't. In a Honda I worked on , in a similar situation, the motor ran fine but the VTEC just didn't kick on as it wasn't plugged in. I'm hoping this will work the same way. Any help would be greatly appreciated ! I tried searching for answers and couldn't find much about it ... please help!!!!!

You need to do your home work better.

The B5254T was not used in a S60. The AME 2008 S60 was equipped with a B5244T5 or B5254T2. Do yourself a favor, get the engine ID off the engine block. Do not rely on the label on the timing belt cover.

Belief won't cut it when planning a engine swap, get the facts.

Ya I know it shouldn't have come in the s60 but that's what it was in so I'm assuming iit was swapped into there . But yes it was written on the timing belt cover so I'll look for the engine code on the block when I get home right now. Thank you for the reply and I'll let you know what it says when I find it , hopefully you'll know whether or not it will work for me!

ok so now I'm really thrown off... on the timing cover AND the engine block of the S60 it says B5254T. However, my XC90 that I'm trying to fix, it's timing cover says B5254T2, but the engine block says B5254T. Both engine blocks have B5254T stamped on them (which I know the S60 isn't supposed to have, but that's what it's got) .... so ... I should be able to throw the S60's motor into the XC90 and use the XC90's ECU and everything correct?

I just don't know why my XC90 has different codes on the timing cover and the engine block

If the replacement engine is out of a 2008 S60 it should be a B5254T2. You should be able to swap the long block and go. If the replacement engine has VVT, Its got to be a B5254T2.

On the blocks, are you sure you are not overlooking the 2 for second revision?

PS: I think I found it. The Bore, Stroke and Compression are the same for the B5254T & B5254T2. Looks like the difference between the two is all in the head. Most likely they took a B5254T short block, then put the correct head on it to make a B5254T2.

Just curious how many miles in your 2006 XC90 when the "low oil pressure" message came up...

Ya both of them have VVT so I'm pretty sure it should work. Sorry I never saw your reply until now!

Update: got the new water pump, idler pulley, timing belt installed. Turned the motor by hand like 20 times just to make sure my timing was correct and that it ran smoothly. Put the transmission back on and put them back into the car. Turned the key and it just clicked, never turned over. My motor is literally seized. Can't turn it by hand anymore. It'll move counter clockwise but gets stuck at the same spot going clockwise. Pulled the motor back out, removed the transmission (as that was the only thing I could imagine would've changed anything) motor is still seized. I'm beyond lost. This is absolutely insane. What could be going on?! I turned it by hand SOOO many times after the timing belt installation and now it won't go anymore. It never even combusted once when i turned the key so I couldn't have bent any valves.. What the heck happened?!?

181k . Only came on after about an hour long drive or so. I feel like I could've avoided all of this trouble with an oil change and a good cleaning of the pick up tube inside the oil pan though unfortunately. Now I've done all this work, got a new motor in there. Now it seized for no reason at all and I'm just completely lost now. So if you get that warning, don't forget and let your wife drive it like I did! I screwed myself pretty good...

Always turn the crankshaft clockwise. If you turn it Counter Clockwise, the timing belt can go slack and slip out of time.

Recheck the timing ....

When you set the tensioner, did you go past the mark then come back to the mark?

I only turned it counter clockwise about an eighth of a turn just to see if it would move so I don't think I turned it enough to mess it up. The timing marks are all lined up still also. That's why I'm so confused because nothing happened between the point where it was turning just fine to when I installed the transmission. Do you think maybe the transmission was installed incorrectly and the shaft that goes into the motor could've jammed something in there?
