P2 part And source for ac clutch, stand alone?

Post by abscate » Sun Jun 16, 2019 4:47 am

Looking at both Volvo web store and FCP it looks like you can’t source a AC clutch standalone.

Is this true?

It appears the clutches are more robust than the earlier ones, but it would still be nice to have something Tom replace it when gap issues come up , withput having the expense And recharge of a compressor replacement.

I remember looking for an AC clutch around 4 years ago. I found nothing.
Ironically, it was because I had a pal who'd evacuate and later reload my AC for a mere $60.
His Snap-On machine would perform a leak test as well as catch, filter and add UV dye to the refrigerant. You'd pay for 134a needed to reach the weight spec.
I had the gap issue but wanted to be thorough about fixing it. From what I understand this job requires special tools along the lines of an alternator freewheel remover but MORE (slim wrenches).

It appears FCP does sell the GEN Volvo Clutch for our compressors.

https://www.fcpeuro.com/products/volvo- ... 33820#desc

Costing $270 for the clutch alone I would purchase the entire compressor for just $100 more.

I bought this tool (see photo) but have not used it yet.
I think if you angle the compressor down 45 degrees (youtube has video of the AC compressor down 45 degrees),
then you can use the tool.
Spray some PB Plaster into the bolt hole (after the 10-mm bolt is out).

See youtube on how to use the tool: basically round circle with 3 bolts, then use the big bolt to extract the Ac Clutch.
Again PB Plaster should help b/c the AC Clutch tends to rust and bind into the shaft.

Unknown about V70’s and XC70

Hey all...MDK here. The reason I wrote about not being able to separate the clutch from the compressor on the other blog is simple. A few years ago I had a 1999 S70 AWD that I boosted...alot! Anyway...1999-2004 engine engine and transmission family. The a/c clutch was going out and we tried to separate them. Eh... you have to pull the compressor to do this... reclaim the refrigerant etc. You know... just get a new compressor assembly and quit spending a dollar trying to save a dime and get back to what's important... putting Honda's and Volkswagens in the rear view mirror!!!....I ROLL

All that work for 2/3 the cost of the compressor and you still have to reclaim/recharge?

Nasty.

MDK, I love your “MDK here” intro...it gives MVS panache...
