2004 d5 163hp AWD

Post by kaneelschep » Mon Jun 17, 2019 2:59 am

Hi all.

My wife needs a car. So I was looking for a second car.
A Vag TDI.... :(
Cause its very hard to beat their mileage and 4wd system.
My audi a4 estate does 50mpg on highway easy. 40mpg is my citytraffic while not even trying. Overtaking and all.
My parents' Audi a6 V6 TDI 180hp quattro still did 37 or higher on highway. And 30 in city.
Also a big 1800 kilo car. Both manual.

Why I bring it up.
Secretly I miss the Volvos.. I miss the space and comfort.
Now I saw a d5 2004 V70 AWD geartronic. Very nice car. Good price.
But what can I expect in mileage? The manual is not at all optimistic..
30mpg for combined traffic.. Thats seems strangely hungry.
Is this true? And why with only 163hp.
Is the car worth it? Of are there better options?

Thanks!

This being an American forum, we didn't got the diesel engine here. The 163hp D5 is economical unless it has some issue. I don't think it's gets only 30 combined. However the AWD doesn't help, plus on a 2004 the AWD system is no longer working unless it was already repaired. Early geartronic transmission can also have problems, while the manual ones fail at the slave cylinder and it's very costly to replace. Get more informations on a european forum such as https://www.volvoforums.org.uk/forumdisplay.php?f=19

Yes, a 2004 car can have problems. Really depends if the previous owner did all repairs or not. You can get a car with little problems, or a car with several things to fix. Can find a list on this video - look in the comments section www.youtube.com/watch?v=aT5BHuKfTR0

Eeugh.. I checked the video and read the comments.. So much problems I've already seen on our 850 T5. It was fun in combination with the fast T5 engine on LPG. And every car has its problems. But not gonna have that on a hungry diesel that is supposed to be our reliable family car.
I will just skip it. ;) And look for a quattro/4motion.
