2000 s70 Hard Shifting - Opinions

Post by chrisdowney20 » Wed Jun 19, 2019 7:22 am

Hello everyone. Long time lurker here and I finally created an account! My 2000 s70 NA has been hard shifting lately especially once the car reaches operating temperature. It's most noticeable in traffic when going from 3rd down to 2nd. It also hesitates going from Park to Drive at operating temperatures (but I kind of contribute that to a non-volvo brand PNP switch that I used to replace the old one). I checked the tranny fluid and the level is correct however it is discolored to the point where I'm afraid to do a flush. I've done most of the work on my car but I'm not comfortable enough to mess around with a transmission.

With that said, I've read several different things on here suggesting the solenoids within the transmission may be the issue or it may just be time for a new tranny.

Background on the car: 210,000 miles (338,000 km), I'm the second owner and I've had the car since about 100,000 miles, contactless ETM upgrade performed a year ago, no codes from my VIDA/DICE software, it's due a PCV cleanout and timing belt change.

Lastly, my question is, not necessarily if it can be fixed but rather should I fix it. Given the value of a base model 2000 s70, is it worth fixing the tranny, having the timing belt service done and having the PCV service done? Ideally, if I did all of that I would like to get another 90,000 miles out of it.

Open to opinions and suggestions. Thanks!!

you don't have anything to loose doing some fluid change. probably not worth fixing if trans goes.
