Post by hav716559 » Thu Jun 20, 2019 9:58 am

Hello, does anyone have a write up on how to replace the alternator on a 2005 XC70? Otherwise, does anyone who has replaced it have any tips or tricks? Thank you!

Remove the intercooler hose in front of alternator. The clamps use 7mm heads and a 1/4 drive 7mm swivel socket with a longer (9 " or more) is the best tool to get it. Remove serpentine belt. If you pry off the cap in enter of the tensioner pulley it will reveal the 15mm bolt and a 3/8 12 point 15 mm socket on a breaker handle or longer ratchet will allow you to slip belt off. Make yourself a belt map first to save the trip inside to look it up on itnernet and then figure which picture you find looks like it might have been your setup. Remove power steering pump by using 12 mm socket with extension and turning the pulley so the holes in pulley allow the tree bolts to be accessed. The pump can be pulled up and over to the driver's side and tied. Now you can get down to the two bolts that go through alternator and compressor. The compressor is on top and you will need to loosen the bottom two a turn so the alternator will tip out to be removed. The other bolt is next to front of alternator down in a hole and it a 12 mm head. The nut on the cable is 13mm covered with a cap (if it is still there). You need to disconnect battery ground cable first. When done and you reattach the ground you will have to lock and unlock ca with remotes to get it out of transport mode so everything works.

Be sure to undo the car battery first

I'm not sure how the alternator comes out from the turbo engine - the space looks quite tight with the larger intake manifold. On the non turbo engine the best is to undo the return (metal) power steering pump hose (don't forget to put back that small bracket), and also to undo the upper radiator hose

+1

It is much easier than it sounds. I like to enjoy, and NOT struggle when working on my cars. Along with the charged air hose, I will pull out radiator fan from above, takes two screws.

Managing PS pump is your key task on your way to the alternator. In addition, I disconnected hard line connection to steering pump. The PS fluid will leak out, prevent it from dripping over the alternator -- use a vacuum plug. Replace o'ring when reconnecting.

Make sure you have alternator with Freewheel pulley.
