1999 s70 turns over but won't fire

Post by 442 » Thu Jun 20, 2019 2:12 pm

Hi, a short time back I was an accident in my 99 S 70. There was damage to the front end but most of it was on the right hand side. After the accident The vehicle started right up and after a few repairs was drivable. Then one morning and it wouldn’t start. Have spark but no fuel was going to the rail. So figured the fuel pump went out. Turns out that fuel pump is fine. I had a friend show up with a snap on diagnostic tool. After a few hours of poking and prodding what came up was an issue with the powertrain control module as it put it. Now that’s about as far as we can go at this point. My question is how can I find out if that indeed is the issue. With that being pretty much my only vehicle for work and money being tight. I can’t dump a bunch of money into this. So if I purchased a used ECM what would it take to have a programed or are there other options? Any ideas on which Direction I should take would be greatly appreciated. Thank you for your time

If the ECM is actually the problem, you'll need to get it cloned. ARD, Hilton, Xemodex, and others offer this service. However the ECM is rarely the issue.

Is your fuel pump actually running or not? The fuel pump relays fail pretty often, so if the fuel pump isn't running, I'd start there. Otherwise, if you have access to VIDA, check for codes there.

Does it run for a fraction of a second, then quit?

Front end collision? You might want to check the recheck the relay box under the hood. The fuel pump relay will be the red one. Also, if the diagnostic tool used was not Volvo specific (rarely are) it may be confusing the issue. These cars have to separate control modules, one for the engine (ECM) and one for the transmission (TCM). As mentioned above the ECM is almost never the issue, although in your case a right hand collision could have damaged the ECM internally or some of the connections. It is easy to remove from the holder once you pull off the top of the case for a visual inspection. I would start there and then work backwards if there is nothing easily visible.

You mention that the pump is running but that there is no fuel to the rail. This seems odd as the ECM to my knowledge will just control the injectors to prevent fuel entering the cylinders. If you pump is running but you don't have pressure at the rail you might want to inspect the check valve on the fuel pump assembly and well as the fuel pressure regulator. If the regulator bladder has ruptured there is a chance that the pressure is just bleeding back to the tank through the return line. I'm not sure about location for your regulator but on my 98 it sits down by the steering rack.

Your friends can be your worst enemies working on cars.

It takes about 30 seconds to read codes on a Volvo, and, all together;

" its never the ECM* "

How did you verify spark is ok, and fuel delivery is not?

The 1999 uses fuel pressure regulation direct with the pump, so you don't have an FPR like a -1998 Volvo
