Rev issues TF-80 transmission

Help, Advice, Owners' Discussion and DIY Tutorials on Volvo XC90s. The XC90 proved to be very popular, and very good for Volvo's sales numbers, since its introduction in model year 2003 (North America).

Rev issues TF-80 transmission

Post by ClintGriffin » Fri Jun 21, 2019 4:11 pm

Hey everyone! I am a new Volvo owner and I tried looking through the forums for anything similar. I couldn't find anything as I was recently diagnosed with an unknown condition and I am in a lot of pain all the time I'm not finding what I was looking for I decided to make a quick post and see if anyone can help me . I am looking for some advice from anyone with the XC90 V8. My problem is I can be driving down the street and hit the gas on the streets doing 30 mph and nothing happens... or it hard shifts when I release the gas pedal to coast after acceleration. Sometimes I can see the RPM needle bouncing up and down ever so slightly. It doesn't do it a lot and it doesn't bounce wildly all over the place but it will bounce around maybe on average plus or minus 3 to 500 RPM. Is anyone familiar with this? Is this a valve body issue?

You don't mention how many miles, and when (or if) you last changed the transmission fluid. With a 2007, I'm guessing you have over 100k miles, and since Volvo doesn't recommend it, many people don't change the fluid. My experience is that it does need to have the fluid changed, and it sounds like you perhaps have sticking valve because of it.

If it was me, I'd start by changing the fluid (and resetting the counter within the transmission computer - you need the Volvo software to do this), and see how it goes. If you're lucky the problem will resolve. If not, you may be in for some valve body work to get it the way you want it.

If you want to change the fluid yourself, look on youtube, or search for "Volvo Gibbons method". It's a little bit different than other cars, especially setting the fluid level. Not hard, but good to know what you're doing before you start.

Good luck!

Roger

According to IPD's website you should have a TF80SC Transmission. I have been wanting an XC90 for sometime and in my research found that after a certain VIN number during the 2007 production year the transmission and balance shaft problems of the V8's were addressed. Not sure about yours, however here a couple things you can try with your TF80SC transmission.

Try a drain and fill and if the fluid is fairly clean do a complete flush using a Synthetic Fluid. Many videos on Youtube.

2 Different Flush Methods With & Without VIDA & DICE

I recently put in a Transgo Shift Kit (different transmission) on a lower mileage 03 S80 T6 and their kit works. Check the listed symptoms on their website against yours.

I'll try and find a video for you on what a solenoid replacement is like.

The is on a different transmission but is a comprehensive video of what needs to be done when you buy a Transgo Kit to rebuild the solenoid in the valve body and why sometimes a reman valve body does not work out of the box.

Hi and thank you for all the help and info everybody! I just bought my XC90 about a month ago. I am used to Jeeps and Fords so this is my first European Vehicle and we decided to buy it my wife and I as we have a two-year-old child and we needed something a bit safer than what we already had. After donating our car to Kars4Kids we bought an XC90 AWD V8 off Craigslist. Our XC90 has just hit the 150,000 mile mark 3 days ago. I haven't changed any of the fluids yet except for an oil change and power steering flush and replaced the tires. I have bought new rotors and brake pads which I will be paying someone to install as I cannot do the work on my own cars anymore. I had planned on just doing a drain and fill on the transmission but am wondering if I do this will I have to have the Vida/dice hooked up to my car after I do the drain and fill? I have been told not to do a drain and fill unless I have it to check things out and make sure things are running normal. Any ideas on whether or not it's okay to just do a drain and fill without the Vida/dice? Is it necessary?

This maybe helpful. Quite bit of stuff.

Here is a video on rebuilding (taking apart) the solenoid though on a different make. This will help decide whether you want to tackle the rebuild. He shows how to take it apart but did not show putting on the new end caps from the Transgo Kit onto the solenoid.

First thing to do is check the fluid. You don’t need vida to do this. On a level surface with the engine running you pull the center plug in the transmission drain. I would definitely recommend at least a drain and fill first. If you can find a mechanic to do a flush using the transmission cooler lines that would be best. You can use the Mobil variant of the transmission fluid, a full flush in this method takes about 12 qts. The valve body issue is a hard shift on 2-3 but if it’s been going for a while that could also be the issue. The VB can be replaced with the transmission in the vehicle if necessary.

It's helpful if you have VIDA/DiCE. The transmission computer knows how the fluid changes with age, and compensates accordingly in how it runs the shift solenoids. It's helpful to reset the counter and tell the computer that it's got new fluid, not the old fluid. With time, I think it will end up compensating accordingly, but you'll be better off if you can reset the counter when you do the fluid change.
