Hey all.. MDK here. So..I know that my fan comes when the A/C is on. However...it doesn't seem to cycle off/on when the a/c is off. ???. I know that there is a temp sensor at the thermostat housing.i have my laptop and my VIDA... will that help? If someone could point me in the right direction... greatly appreciated. I've searched the forum with not much success... I'm diagnostically and software illiterate...eh

If the engine temp is not climbing above normal then the fan may not NEED to turn on. Is the gauge reading normal? Are there any indications that the engine is getting too hot?

Thanks Chrism... with Volvo's ubiquitous temp gauge... it's hard to tell. I wish it had a "real time" display. IE... watching the thermostat dump. My 2002 V-70 NT wagon fan will run after I turn it off from normal driving and then shut off after awhile. The R car.. doesn't.

When the fan runs for a/c I hear it as it runs on 33% or more usually. When I have car idling without a/c on I rarely can hear the fan, I will have hood open and suddenly feel hot air and then look and the fan will be running very slow and silent. Also as a point of reference, if you leave the cap off tank with a/c off the fan comes on at 225 F +/-. The coolant will boil and some will often burp out of tank before fan runs, TOTALLY NORMAL. The engine compartment and engine is cooler with a/c on so if you think turning a/c off has some benefit for lower temp, it DOES NOT. Lower humidity from refrigeration contributes to more alert driver and will keep windows clear on rainy warm days so they assume it will be on all the time unless the temp is so cold the system is inhibited.

Thanks J57... what you said about engine and fan running a little and quietly... yeah I've noticed that. I just assumed because the R's run a little hotter that the fan would be much more noticeable... being a seasoned residential A/C tech myself...I would think you would want "more air across the coils'" .. radiator in this case. Hmm...Heat is the enemy of all machinery and I want to do my due diligence to save this car...I got it from a biker who got it from a police auction as a "theft recovery" a few years ago. MDK rolling on...ps. why my car is upside down...I have no idea.
pilot error? .. probably
