Fluids for Volvo XC70 2006 - 133k Miles

Post by fontoledo » Sun Jun 23, 2019 6:35 pm

Hello all

I'm trying to treat my recently acquired XC70 with as much care as possible (see some repairs here: viewtopic.php?f=9&t=89457#p506295). One of the items that i'm pretty blind on, is the type of fluids that I need to be using. Namely:

-Gas: Being a Turbo, should I use 93? or 87 is just fine?
-Steering fluid
-Brake Fluid
-Power steering Fluid
-Gear Oil (ATF)

What do you guys usually use for your Volvo? Are there precise brands/types that are recommended to use for all of these (and maybe other?) components?

Thanks!

That first post covered a lot of the usual wear items. It looks like you're getting an education on suspension parts.

Gas: See what the owner's manual says. With turbos middle or premium grade is called for. Better fuel allows the engine's management system to advance the spark when it needs to. The difference can be felt driving on rolling hills. If you hear your car rattling whilst struggling uphill slowly, you may benefit from better gas.

Steering fluid: Get Pentosin CHF-11S. Diligently flush out (via displacement) old fluid which is likely to be brown or red.

Brake fluid: DOT 4 is good enough. In all likelihood the brake fluid has never been touched so a flush (through ALL FOUR calipers' bleed nipples) is in order. Grease the glide pins and inspect things while you're there.

ATF: People get all twisted up over ATF. The Volvo branded fluid is insultingly expensive. Toyota T-IV is one of many substitutes. There are Aisin T-IV fluids on the market. Also, Valvoline MaxLife Dex/Merc LV (the LV HAS to be on the label) is OK to use.
Go to the Amaliestore.com and buy a case of Wolf's Head Super Universal Synthetic Automatic Transmission Fluid as well as oils because the prices are unbeatable and shipping above $39 (last time I checked) is free.
Search "drain & fill" or "Gibbons method" for How To's.

Funny you didn't ask about motor oil.

I use 87 on my Volvo, and the only difference I can feel when I ignored my aunts insistence on 91 was more money in my wallet.

ATF is recommended to do a drain and fill. Link you the OE brand.

Driving habits. I rarely boost my T5 so I use a mix of 87 and 93 to average 90 filling at half tank. That’s the cheapest cost per octane you can get in my area as 93 and 91 are really close in price.

If you are in urban Chicago traffic, 93 Is a waste of money.

I do use 93 in the higher compression NA P2 exclusively. That one is so stingy on gas I reward it.

What's the point of owning a T5 then? :-)

A friend said it felt wrong and risky to rev my high milage car above 5000 rpm. I just responded that I do so all the time and it's never gone wrong yet ..

When the right person shows up with the right price, Elizabeth will move onto the next owner!

On advice of top shelf Volvo techs, I do bring it up to 4000 rpm monthly to try and make sure the valves spin and seat. About ten minutes in third gear on the first part of the highway,
