1999 S70 NA Evita right front caliper hot 30648017 (crappy caliper slide bolts)  Topic is solved

Post by abscate » Fri Jun 28, 2019 7:12 pm

I have excellent braking action but RF caliper showing300F after hard brake while LF stays at 200F, asmeasured by IR gun. I pushed 500 ml brake fluid through each and it was better , but still warmer. Piston In caliper easily moved by hand pressure.

I removed caliper and found pins heavily corroded. I locked them into a power drill and polished them with 150 grit sandpaper, then heavily greased them up, reinstalled.

Left side fine.

Both rotors Now showing 200 F

Reminds me to polish and lube my caliper slides. Would like to get through one summer without having to change calipers.

Those slides are really corroded. Are those Volvo slides or aftermarket? I kept my Volvo slides and gave them a light polish, as the slides that came with my rebuild were already rusting and pitting.

That’s a Cardone rebuild Volvo caliper, and , yes, the caliper slide bolts are cheap Metal. I would think seriously about swapping good Volvo slides for the pot metal ones when you return your core here.

Or , the expensive cure, 2 per caliper so $30. Ouch

Agreed with the above. I swapped my original Volvo slide pins into the rebuilt calipers I bought a few years ago, and they were still looking good when I installed new brake pads last weekend. The slide pins that came with the rebuilt caliper were strongly attracted by a magnet (indicating that those pins were most likely not stainless steel), whereas the original Volvo ones were not attracted by a magnet (indicating that they are stainless steel).

I was doing an axle CV boot today so I decided to check the front caliper slide pins at the same time and re-grease the front pads. This car (98 V70) already had rebuilt calipers when I got the car (213k miles) and they are still on there (279k miles). Fortunately I kept the badly rusted, factory calipers from a 96 850 (205k miles) I wrecked about ten years ago.

Here's the slide pins side by side as they came out of the passenger side caliper from both cars, no cleaning was done, the unknown mileage rebuilt caliper pins are on the left and the 205k factory slide pins are on the right:

and the magnet test:

And here are the same for the rebuilt driver side caliper; the rebuilt caliper pins were actually stainless and non-magnetic, but were also much more corroded than the other two 205k factory pins:

So for both sides I greased and installed the 205k factory pins. Tossed the other four pins in the box in case I need them later.

Another item for the must-have junkyard list - scavenge the slide pins from those rusting, decrepit factory calipers!

You see honey, that garage full of parts IS useful.

For thread reference I used Permatex brand Anti-seize; Aluminum dust in grease, as the lube for these.

I’ll also check with a Jason to see ofc we get full core back without pins

Quick note - another 1999 V70 XC brake vibration solved with removal and cleaning of magnetic aftermaket caliper pin corrosion. These were not as bad as mine but made a huge difference in operation.

Another thing to watch for here - lube the slider, then see how it slides through the rubber grommet in the caliper.

I've had a couple times where the caliper casting rusted, compressing the rubber grommet so it binds on the slider.

The grommet can be removed, then a round file used to clean the inside of the hole. Reinstall with some grease inside and out. Recheck and made sure the slider moves freely.

I'd buy the new Volvo pin, at $16, it is cheap b/c it will easily last 10yrs, by that time you probably get rid of the car.
Plus it saves the brake pad wear and fuel cost from the added friction from the binding caliper.

You need four of them,so it’s $60....but are you going to get back 2-3 hours of saved labor over cleaning the crappy one?

My guess is twice that.

Funny how price anchoring works. My Initial reaction to $30 bucks of pins was the caliper is only $50.

That, of course, is the cheap POS caliper with pot metal pistons
