Wouldn't pass State Inspection

Post by Mr. Detail » Wed Jul 03, 2019 8:55 am

Hi Guys,
Just got the phone call I was afraid of but never heard of a shop not passing a car for bad motor mounts and a tranny mount.
He also said I need the left front hub assy replaced which I already knew about. Then he tells me that I may also need a new trans-axle after replacing the hub assy. Is that necessary?? All toll, he thinks it will cost me $1000.00. I want to fix the car but not sure about the $1000.00. Are the mounts a difficult job to do? Not for me but for another mechanic that might be less expensive.

Thanks!

Trans buckle mount is stupid simple to fix.

Get a written up estimate with parts you can understand the job. Phone quotes are not useful.

A trans-axle is a transmission,

The axle shaft is the thing in between the transmission and the wheel hub.

When you do the wheel bearing hub, you remove the drive axle, so there should not be extra labor on that front.

Putting a $1000 repair into a good runner makes sense, it doesn't matter what it is 'worth' on resale.

I'm not aware how these inspections go, but is it possible the garage wants to earn some money ? The axle thing depends if it's stuck into the hub, otherwise no need to replace it. My take on this, is get a used hub from the junk yard or even better, off Ebay. The hub must be from a non turbo with same transmission

For the mounts, depends which ones are bad, the upper and lower torque ones are quite easy to replace.

Be sure not to let a garage put some cheap aftermarket pars.

Thank you guys for your inputs. This mechanic shop I took it to today I have used many times before with no problem. This shop actually lets me bring him the parts and he only charges me for the labor. Not sure why this time he told me to go elsewhere. Do you have to lift out the engine to do the mounts?
"abscate", you are correct and I misspoke. It would be the axle-shaft that might need replacing.
"E Showell", is a trans buckle mount the same thing as a transmission mount? Are there more than one of these? I am guessing at least two.

On the humorous side, my 15 yr. old daughter tells me I am cheap and I agree with her. :) These teens today think I have a money tree out back.

Trans buckle mount is right down on the front cross member. Two nuts, two bolts and you're done. Couldn't be easier. Only reason not to diy is because you don't own any tools and, if that's the case, go buy some tools. They'll pay for themselves in this job alone.

Mr. "E Showell", would it be too much to ask which tools I might need?

They all say that  When I bought my used S60 he was like, wow it looks great, is it new ? No. Ahh then...

not necessarily spoiled.. it's just that they would like to brag to their friends. I was asked more than once "is this the most luxurious car out there?" 8)

Speaking of tools, these are mine, of course not all are needed for the torque mounts, perhaps with jackstands (at least one), metric wrench and 3/8" and 1/2" sets (the 1/2" would be for the larger bolts that would destroy a smaller 3/8" ratchet) and a 2-4ft extension bar (quite important, the longer the better) it should be doable. The engine needs not supported but it's better to replace them one by one. If I remember well the upper so called 'strut' bar I think also needs removed

.

Metric sockets, probably somewhere in the 15-18 mm range. Six point are best, but 12 would work in a pinch. I don't recall exact sizes, sorry.

oragex;
You listed two parts for me above. Torque Rod and Torque rod mount. Is the quantity I need one of each?
