2010 XC90 Bulb Failure / Right Turn Signal

Help, Advice, Owners' Discussion and DIY Tutorials on Volvo XC90s. The XC90 proved to be very popular, and very good for Volvo's sales numbers, since its introduction in model year 2003 (North America).

2010 XC90 Bulb Failure / Right Turn Signal

Post by TSully44 » Tue Jul 09, 2019 2:23 pm

I have been having issues with the right turn signal. It started intermittently, but now they do not work at all. No Right turn signal lights flash, nor do any flash when I use the Hazards button. The left side turn signal lights perfectly

So far I have:
Replaced all turn signal bulbs, using the 'electrical grease' and inspected the other bulbs in the front and rear assemblies
Replaced the turn signal arm on the steering column

Inspected the bulb sockets for correction, poor contacts, loose or frayed wires - and found nothing out of sorts.

Anyone out there have any ideas? The new turn signal arm set me back $8 and I would like to try to avoid replace random parts using the trial and error technique.

Thanks!

Have you checked the fuses? Not sure on your car, but maybe the two sides have separate fuses.

As I understand the diagnostic system for the lights it is triggered by the lack of voltage or current (I think the latter). So the system is not seeing the required power draw. Now I don't know if the diagnostic system is separate from the actual wiring or it is part of it - which if it is will help where you have to start your fault tracing.

So to be clear - NONE of the hazard related lights on the right side work. The hazards DO work on the left side or the hazards don't work at all? Just trying to figure out where you need to start the fault trace on the wring.

Have you taken a VOM to it? Look for power and/or a short.

Thanks,
I have checked the fuses - I don't think any of them are related to the turn signals. Yes, the driver side turn signals and hazards work correctly. The passenger sides don't work at all. I did replace the CEM arm, and the fact the Hazards are controlled from a different button makes me think there is a flaw/short somewhere in the system. I don't have a volt meter - maybe I need to get one and check the sockets.
It is odd that if the front or rear is out it disables the whole side of the vehicle.

On every Volvo I have owned, one bad bulb will not take out the entire system. That is why I suggested a common fuse for each side.

Maybe take a look at the blinker relay.

A VOM may be helpful as you can check for a short in the system in addition to power.

Could check the door wiring, had something similar occur with someone earlier this year, driver side- viewtopic.php?f=10&t=86106

May not be your issue (this one was intermittent) but the link has a bunch of reference information to assist in troubleshooting.

Good luck with your repair.

Thanks - I went over the vehicle again this weekend. Checked all fuses, they are fine. I did put a meter to the turn signal sockets. Got a pulsing reading, but very weak (.11v).
I looked at the link above - will look into wiring coming through the passenger door.

Just checked the connection at the door - all looks good. Wiring going into passenger area looks good too.
