Everything we've been discussing and looking at seems to be for regular Struts. The seller's description for the parts are for Nivomats and it looks the same as those we are discussing. Was wondering if anyone has done work with this setup to confirm Yea or Nay?

EDIT: The OP's photos indicate Non-Nivomats.

It won't affect the ride height.as long as you replace both rears . have you ever priced out rear nivomat shocks? Out this world. Not trying to be a wise guy here... but for reference.. this spring my S60 R had the 4-c suspension... not anymore. I stripped it out and put standard AWD suspension on it. The Volvo dealership couldn't believe it until they saw it for themselves... MDK

I find Lesjofors for the left spring I need (part 9473371) but only genuine volvo for the right (8646865). These part numbers are found using the code on the id plate and the dealer confirmed them. fcpEuro is searching for a right Lesjofors but it's been awhile so I suspect it isn't available. Also haven't found it at IPD, 1A Auto or a general google search.

Another OEM supplier other than Lesjofors?

Is it bad to use Lesjofors on the left and genuine volvo on the right? May not be worth it anyway. Can genuine volvo springs be paired with OEM struts/shocks?

I wrote a reply and thought it was posted? Maybe went to another post, hope not.

Either way, I asked the wrong question because I was not careful to differentiate between a shock or strut for the Nivomat. I did find the answer at IPD.

I think I also mentioned this in a recent post about the difference between a strut and shock. I originally questioned whether the eBay seller was selling Nivomat parts to go with the Nivomat suspension? IPD shows and describes the Nivomat as a shock and not strut and it does not have a spring perch.

Again, a strut is part of a McPherson Strut Assembly by design so it will always have a spring perch. The only exception is a shock with a "helper" spring.

I have not seen a complete Nivomat suspension but from the looks of the lower attachment point it is inside of a spring rather than sitting outside. As for the eBayer if those parts are for the 04 XC70 than the description is incorrect.

OK. Found both springs aftermarket at eeuroparts.com. Any idea of the quality of springs from this supplier?

9473371 $31 (eEuro Preferred) or $83 (Suplex)

Also, why are they labelled "driver side" and "passenger side"? This varies depending on the market and side of the road people drive on?.

Are you sure these springs have sides ? I haven't seen that on any of our Volvos, VWs, BMW

The volvo dealer parts guy quoted different part numbers for right rear (9473371) and left rear (8646865) springs and said specifically, "yes, there are right and left springs" before I could even ask. fcp said the same. (I think I switched the numbers in my post above.) Other than that no, I'm not really sure. Images of both part numbers on both the fcp and eEuro web site look identical - the number of coils and direction of coiling are the same - but I suppose these images may not be a reliable.

Both these part numbers show the same rear spring code (16) I got from the id plate. If they aren't sided why does volvo have both? I know, just for fun.

It's time to put in an order. Unless there are massive numbers of defects and we all drive the same road with the same conditions you really won't know. Besides you don't having many options.

I've convinced myself I can replace this broken spring if I can disassemble what's there now.

My main concern is loosening the 17mm bolt at the lower strut fitting to the control arm. With the car sitting on its wheels the broken spring blocks access to this bolt. I can get a simple wrench or a shallow socket (without anything to turn it with) in there. But I can't get a ratchet or breaker bar.

Will gravity cause the broken spring to shift exposing the lower strut bolt? I know I can just try it and see but I want to anticipate any significant problems. The broken end is sharp and the tires are relatively new. Don't want any tire trauma.

The broken spring is missing almost a full coil and is longer than it would normally be when assembled (and partially compressed). Will this make it easier or harder to disassemble?

Any suggestions for removing the lower strut bolt if I can't expose it better?
