Subframe mount bolt torque, The abscate method. Part 985111

Post by MDK » Wed Jul 10, 2019 12:31 pm

So, abscate. I took your advice ( which I do most of the time) and just got done checking my subframe bolts. So the 2 front ones...nothing, but the rears...eh. if you have 360 degree radius..the passenger rear one I turn about a 1/4th of the way. The driver's rear about 3/4's of a turn. Check..check ..check it!!

Re: The abscate method of checking TTY bolts (subframe or other)

Post by abscate » Wed Jul 10, 2019 1:26 pm

YIKES!!!

For reference, this is about (ahem) if we should follow VIDA and use new subframe bolts

cough, cough, cough...

The method
This probably is a place where you should use new Torque to Yield (stretch) bolts

If you are scraping by, at least punch mark all four with two marks and then watch them with the abscate formula

Drive a day, inspect
Drive a week, inspect
Drive a month, inspect
three months, inspect
Six months - they are proclaimed to be safely attached and staying in.

You might get bored with all that inspection, buy new ones and torque them to spec. They make great birthday presents

PS - I don't think I have to say this, but if they DO move, you have to reset the inspection calendar.

I feel better now.

Yeah abscate...you know I've watched the shop drop the subframe bolts about half way to lower the K member so to access the oil cooler lines...never seen them replace the bolts. They just ran them back up. Hmm. I'm a little apprehensive of over tightening them. So I'll check them later. I'm either fearless or oblivious..not sure which. MDK over and out.

I remember looking into what the final torque is on a these with 100 Nm plus 120 angle and got a number like 450 Nm, almost 5x initial torque. I didn’t measure them on my P2 clutch job; I used assembly lubed and punchmarked/inspected though.

Wow. Their insurance company might be making a big payout someday. This probably underscores the need to work with an independent who knows these cars well. Im afraid to ask if they just air gunned them on and then walked away.
