Tensioner making noise

Post by koley5 » Wed Jul 10, 2019 2:22 pm

2001 XC70 - 190,000 miles. The middle serp. belt tensioner began making an awful noise this morning. I popped the hood, put some light on it and I could see it was actually moving in and out. I shut the car down immediately. Going to do a timing belt, tensioners and a water pump. Can't, for the life of me, find the water pump though. Is it behind the middle tensioner? I've watched every YouTube I could find today, but none are of my engine. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks in advance. (The middle tensioner has a bolt sticking out of it for the IPD tool. The Aisin water pump I bought has a pulley on it, but no bolt in it. I'm confused.)

No dude..1 10 mm bolt in lower center cover. There is a complete procedure on FCPEURO via YouTube ..S 60 engine is basically the same for xc70 5 cylinder. The only difference I saw was the 7 oclock or 11 o'clock position on the tensioner. Go by your VIN#...

Is the timing belt still sitting on the pulleys ? WP is the first pulley on the left https://i.ytimg.com/vi/cioUVAivnEo/maxresdefault.jpg

It is really not easy to get to the WP bolts (7) because they are hidden and recessed and the normal socket won't reach them while you can't use and extension either. Perhaps a long socket is the best bet (just a guess) - not sure the bolts size, perhaps a 10mm

To find each hidden bolt, position the new pump the same way and look where the bolts go

I did the timing belt kit and water pump replacement last winter. As mentioned FCPEURO makes a great tutorial video.

I installed the OEM Aisin Water Pump kit. I used a tab of silicone grease to hold the thin WP gasket onto the block.

Here's a nice video of how to flush all the coolant out of the system
