96 850T check engine light on but no codes

I thought the check engine light indicated a fault code but several attempts all result in zero codes found. Should I get a different reader? The only thing wrong with it is it's from Harbor Freight.

I'm not sure how well these readers read the early Volvos. As a 96 I believe it no longer has the under hood code reader. There are several items on MVS on how to build a basic code reader with cheap components using an LED bulb.

It might be a Volvo Code P1xxxx that the reader can't map. If the light is on, a code is stored.

Make sure the B+ voltage is good and tight

If the car have auto transmission it could be request from TCM to turn on check engine light and that can ONLY be read via special Volvo scan tool...at least VOL-FCR.

Stop by an auto parts store and ask to use theirs. Most chains let you do it for free.
