2000+ Ignition Switch Compatibility

Post by bmdubya1198 » Wed Jul 17, 2019 10:46 am

I got an ignition switch a couple weeks ago for my V70R off a 2004 C70, and it's supposed to be the same part according to various parts sites (like Lisle) but for some reason the screws are different. Unfortunately the car at the junkyard has since been crushed, and I don't know which screws I'm supposed to have. I know they must be longer than the screws that are currently on my car.

Does anyone know if these parts are compatible, and if I can use this one on my car? The switch on the left is the original, and the one on the right is the 2004 C70 switch (in the top picture, in the second picture they are reversed). You can see the black plastic pieces are extended and the switch required a longer screw to attach to the steering column.

Stick the part numbers into Volvo webstore and see what compatibility comes up.

The C70 is a P80 chassis up to 2004, but there are differences in electrical stuff, so precede carefully. An ignition switch which plugs in but is wired differently could be really ....interesting.

See, that's the weird part... nothing comes up when I search those PNs on any sites.

When I looked up the ignition switch for my 2000 V70 (a different PN from both of those), it showed it's compatible with 1998-2004 P80s. Which is also weird... '98-'99 (or at least early '99) was the older style.

Ah...how about those part numbers are actually for the plastic case And are not orderable?

Flip them over and search for part numbers on the white plastic part maybe?

There was an ignition switch mid year 1999 part change

Evita and Rlizabeth have the early hard grey plastic switch, later 99 went to a black and white one

Part numbers to come

Early part
Later part 8650054

I'll look over them closely and see what I can find.

Duh... I forgot I had an '01 S60 sitting on my driveway. That has the exact same PN as the C70 switch (8645228). I borrowed the longer screws from it (same screws, just a couple mm longer) and installed it in the R. ETM whine is still there, and still have battery voltage at the ETS light signal wire. Ugh... yet another dead end.

Once you get that R Rolling, you are going to have to marry it.

Keep at it, you’ll get there.

Lol seriously, this car is driving me nuts. The boost issue I'm 90% sure is the intercooler, and the issue with the AC made itself pretty obvious very quickly. The codes/flickering CEL/ETS light/whining ETM are the real problems.

Have we nailed Down that you have a solid B+ everywhere ?

I’m thinking of Greg and his loose starter nut and battery cables.

Check the cables for loss or heat with an IR gun

Don’t forget your accessory overload relays.
They are a choke point in the power distribution
system that can be a central point of failure.
