Well I went and did it new V60

Post by ljsommar1 » Thu Jul 18, 2019 10:47 am

Picked up a new 2020 V60. This will be my wife's car.
Love the car but there are some really annoying features, in particular it of course, has no dipstick. I would like to talk to the engineer who decided that that was a good idea.

The dealership tells me that there is no way for Vida to enable the display to show the actual gear (instead of D) on a permanent basis. I know there are numerous Vida experts on this site, do any of you have expertise with the new SPA cars? Also is it possible to set a longer wiper interval on the back window? The dealer says no. I already have found them to be wrong on other things, so I am not confident that they aren't just blowing me off.

I will be placing an ad in the classifieds for her current 2002 V70 (220 K miles). I am confident it would reach 300K with continued proper care. Trans has been flushed 5 times since I have had it (78K) and it has the Bosch ETM.

A big thanks to all who have helped me maintain the car over the years. I am a little apprensive about the new V60 because there is virtually no info out there on it. Even Alldata does not cover it.
Thanks

Pretty much everything that goes for the other SPA cars will be true for the V60 and the others have been around for a while now.

Anyway congratulations. I've only driven one briefly and it was a nice drive with the D4 diesel but as someone who actually uses all the space in the V70 none of the newer Volvos will every make it into my care I'm afraid.

The bulk of buyers don't care about dipsticks as they don't opne the hood. The long drain intervals assure some oil will be consumed. Oil DOES NOT HAVE to be kept at full level but with an easy way to see oil level many would see that the engine uses a quart in 4000 miles and know their car uses oil. ALL ENGINES USE OIL. If you have a vehicle that you do not ass oil to then it is because the accumulation of contaminants equals loss through valve stem seals, turbo seal (if fitted), and cyl wall deposit and lube.

The no dipstick problem won’t be a problem until it’s out of warranty.

Can you imagine owning one of these that’s 20 years old with no dipstick? Like today’s P80s, but no way to get an oil level.

Maybe by that time there’ll be an easy tool to plug into the computer to get the level. I assume there are sensors for level.

Anyway, congrats on the new V60, ljsommar! That’s really cool you bought a new Volvo. Please keep us updated.

What color? I spent a few days in a 2019 T5 earlier this year. What impressed me most was the turning radius. My theory on dipstick deletion is Volvo doesn't want customers to see how nasty and low the oil is after 10K. Especially in town drivers. Keep us informed on the quality as it's built in the USA. The V60 isn't built in in the US is it? Only the S60?

Good question, I assumed it was since the S60 is. Hopefully not China like the XC60. June

June, I didn't think of that (oil comsumption) but I bet you are right. It is fusion red, my wife's choice, but I like it. I am tired of black and grey cars. I specially ordered it with 17" wheels and the ride is very nice. We ordered the T5 Momentum and it has more than enough power for us (you would like the T6 better, I think). Yes, I am an old f***.
The V60 is built in Sweeden, the S60 in the USA.

I will be changing the oil myself at 5K intervals. When the "product specialist" tried to tell me that would void the warranty I am afraid I flipped out on him a little and threatened to return the car. The sales manager straightened him out and I cooled down but it still bothers me a little. The dealer's motto is "no hype no pressure" or so they say.

So far (less than 100 miles) we love the car. If it is as good as the 2002 V70, I will be a happy camper.
