'94 850 NA head

Post by Mstrshkbrnnn » Fri Jul 26, 2019 10:31 am

So a month or so ago i did my cam seals with a coworker, and after a day and a half of fighting with them because they didn't want to come out, he resorted to jamming a screwdriver in there which, as you'd expect, left some serious gouging. At first I thought the surface that got gouged was my cam. Easy fix in my eyes, just get some new cams. But after further looking into, I've realized that it was my head and cam cover that were gouged. The flat mating surface upon which the cam seals sit are gouged. I was just wondering what head I could put onto the car? Would I only be able to install an N/A 2.4 head, or would I be able to use a 2.4t or 2.3t head? I would use the N/A cams no matter what head i go with, but I would just like to know which head is possible to use.

Turbo heads have different manifold ports, that is the main issue, I wouldn't mess with it.

If your 94 has VVIS on the intake manifold and you want to keep it, then you need a 93-95 NA head with VVIS, for the manifold ports to match.

If you want to lose the VVIS then any 95-98 NA head will work (that is, most 95 are not VVIS, but a few were), be sure to grab the intake manifold too so you can replace it.

Is it leaking oil around the outside of the cam seals? If not I might leave it alone.

It's pissing from the seals.

RTV? If gouge is deep, use JBWeld to fill it in.

Hopefully you do not have VVIS. Non-VVIS, NA heads are very common.

How would I know whether or not it has vvis? Is that what the vacuum actuated flaps in the intake manifold are?

That's exactly what it is. Also the intake mani is massive and heavy.

Post a picture of it, we can tell if it is a VVIS from the picture. They look very different from the standard intake manifold.
