How many drain and fills ?

Post by GlennG2759 »

2006 V70 NA new to me 100,500 miles. Vehicle shifts fine.Trying to do the math. How many drain and fills do I have to do to get to relatively fresh fluid. First took 3.5 qts.(very dark). What is the recommended mileage in between drain and fills? Thanks

I'd get 11 more quarts.. 3.5x3.. then get a bottle of lubegaurd .. add 5 oz(1/2 bottle) on the final one. I personally pumped mine out @the radiator. 2002 V70 non turbo 215,000 miles..

There are some who fear changing the fluid all at once regardless of method

This is what you are considering doing. Some however do this over a period of weeks between each.

Many here just do it all at once.

I did 2 drain and refills and put transtune in. I did have major shift problems but now it shifts gears like new.

Check to be sure but total fill from factory (from a dry system) is about 8.1 quarts.

For a simply drain and refill, it is about 3.5 quarts.

Just use the principle of "half-life" or dilution ratio and do the math.

I wrote a DIY ATF fluid for XC90 a while ago...

Were it me I would do a drain and fill, drive it for a day or two and then do another drain and fill. After that just do a drain and fill every two or three oil changes.

According to my math, 4 changes will get you to 90% new fluid.
1-- 43.75%
2-- 68.35%
3-- 82.20%
4-- 89.98%
This assumes that the new fluid is fully mixed in with the old.
Of course, after the second drain, you're replacing more new fluid than old, so factor that in to your 'is it worth it?' calculation.

You're a clean freak, you say? You want 99% new? That'll take 8 changes (98.9977%) :P

Is this the same as the "Gibbons Method" I've read about?

What are general opinions on the need for the in-line filter that he added?

I think if I were to put in a filter I would install a "Y" so it is only filtering a portion. Not sure how much the filter reduces the pressure or if there were ever a major issue with the transmission it would be plugged up?

I purchased quite of few of the Magnefine filters years ago during a sale but never got around to installing them. One was for a 98 S70 T5 which seem to get dirty pretty quickly.
