01 V70 coolcant requirement and recommendation

Post by CIK7 »

I have to replace the radiator, if not the AC condensor with it. Front end fell in a hole; Condensor caved in a good bit and radiator plastic cracked. During my search on forums what coolant to use, my head started spinning. Lots were saying Peak was good, Zerex is good, Prestone is good, phosphate this, silicate that, HOAT (supposedly the type Volvo uses). I read an article that OAT can be more harmful but then another say its better than IAT. RobertDIY (for those with P80, P2 cars) recommended Zerex. Theres pink, red, dark blue, light green, mid to dark green. NAPA has a sale on their universal coolant right now, its the green (silicate right?). Please help me. Should i buy HOAT? I'm looking for a good but cheaper product. I would like some simple answers if thats possible. Thank you.

Something i forgot to mention is that the coolant in my system is yellowish (pic attached) and came that way from the used car dealer. The stuff Volvo currently lists as factory for their cars (including the fitment calculator) says blue (G48).

Is this accurate? This is what i found. Theres the Valvoline brand Zerex G48, then theres Volvo OEM G48.

As above, really don't see the idea with Zerex. Stay away from Prestone, I had it and it caused deposits.
Volvo coolant concentrate sells for $25, mixed with 1 gallon of distilled water from Walmart ($2), it's under $30. Prestone you have to buy the 50/50 it gets even more expensive. Zerex concentrate is about same price as genuine

Get a small paper towel and dip it in the reservoir, sometimes it appears yellow but once outside may look green-ish. If in doubt, flush the system a few times with distilled water (fill, drive, flush, repeat). Never put the garden hose in there - never use tap water because it cannot be fully flushed and will cause limestone deposits that can block passages

Zerex G-05 is the correct alternative to Volvo coolant. It is yellow, just like what appears to be in your reservoir. Usually runs around $17-18/gallon. The prediluted & full concentration bottles are easily mistaken, so just be sure of what you have before you dump it in.

Edit: I’ve usually paid $17-18/gallon of concentrated G-05, but I see it is available online for less than $15 for full concentration.

Oragex,
I emphasized your first sentence. What did you mean by this?
Did you mean you don't trust the brand Zerex in general? That particular formulation (G48)?
Or is it just the fact that it's about the same price as genuine? etc.

Just curious.

I have been using Zerex G05 without issues in my 99 for a few years now and I just wanted clarification on your first sentence.

Thanks

-A
