V70 Fan Intermittent

Post by Roger_850T »

I'm having trouble with the climate fan in my 2002 V70. It's intermittent. Sometimes it blows in pulses. wooh, wooh, wooh, maybe about 1-2 Hz. When the car is really hot, when it's been parked outside and baked in the sun, (interior well over 100F,) then it doesn't blow at all. (Most inconvenient, the blower fan dies when you need the AC the most!) The blower fan varies when the setpoint is manual, set to a constant speed. The fan doesn't make any noise, and seems to run quite properly when thing are cool.

Any suggestions on the problem? The motor seems fine. The controller (even when in manual, at a fixed setpoint) is ignored. Any suggestions on how to troubleshoot and confirm vs. just randomly replacing parts?

Thanks for the suggestions!

What do you mean by ignored controller ? The other thing to look at is the cabin temp sensor

By that I mean I can set the manual fan control somewhere (middle, max, off, anywhere in between) and the LED's around the knob light up in the corresponding position (middle, max, off, in-between), but the fan does not change at all.

When the fan chooses to run, it sounds great. (No grinding or ugly bearing noises - sounds like a properly running fan.) And when it's working properly, then adjusting the manual control knob makes the fan speed up and slow down accordingly. But when it's misbehaving, it blows in pulses, "wuh wuh wuh" or doesn't run at all. When it's pulsing, it still sounds good, (no other unusual noises then, either,) just gives erratic airflow.

Also, when the fan is not running, if I turn the manual knob, I see the green light for the A/C turn amber when the fan knob is at zero, then green when the fan is supposed to be turning. I have not been successful in inducing airflow by driving with the windows cracked open, so I don't even get any cooling at that point.

The worst is when the wife parks it in a sunny parking lot while she's shopping, then the A/C doesn't work when she gets back in the car. I really feel the heat on that one... ;)
