I am in the throes of an engine replacement. My mechanic notes the heater core inlet and outlet hoses appear swollen from years of oil seepage (I believe from the turbo oil line) and recommended replacement. I agree with the recommendation. Assuming the condition may recur in time, does it make sense to put a piece of split loom over those rubber hoses to act as an oil shield? Just thinking out loud here.
I'd be interested in opinions.

Re: 2006 V70 R -- heater core hoses
Yep. Needed that like a second rectum. Head gasket failure. Choice was head r&r or replacement engine. Cost was about the same, so I went with a used engine with 78k miles versus the 212k plus on the existing.

I'd get used hoses. Maybe wrapped with some aluminum foil (the kitchen kind)

Re: 2006 V70 R -- heater core hoses
New hoses already on order. Don't want used in that application and I'm not a fan of buying critical rubber parts used.
Still interested in reactions to the split loom idea.

Re: 2006 V70 R -- heater core hoses
What is it that leaks oil so badly that you have to protect the hoses from it? Will the new engine put an end to the leaking?

Re: 2006 V70 R -- heater core hoses
Expecting the new engine will put an end to it. Guessing leak is from an oil line to turbo, but am not familiar with turbo plumbing on these cars. Mechanic said evidence of years worth of oil leakage on heater hoses -- somewhat surprising for an extensively dealer-serviced car.
My mechanic also said, yeah, it won't be leaking now.

Re: 2006 V70 R -- heater core hoses
From a fastidious maintainer of cars like you, skip, the loom and just inspect hoses twice a year for damage or oil. If you see any, wipe it off, degrease, and fix leak. Real Volvo rubber lasts a long time
