Rear brakes from XC90 - Possible?

Post by Zolll » Sun Aug 18, 2019 6:38 pm

Hi! I was wondering whether it’s possible to install the rear brakes of an XC90 onto my 2004 XC70 (caliper, bracket, rotor, pads, line). Couldn’t find anything in the search function.

I have done the 305mm upgrade for the front but I’m still disappointed with the braking performance in general and especially when towing my trailer.

Thanks for your help!!

80% of brake performance comes from the front. Very little need in a bigger rear brakes.

The reason why P2 brake feel weak is hidden in its brake booster. Some people replace it with one from P1 platform, like from V50 (some custom adapter is required), some modify the booster: it has a spring that controls the amount of brake pedal's travel before the booster kicks in. Booster and the brakes themselves are more beefy and capable than in most of Toyota's, for example, where the brakes are much more catchy.

Thanks! I may look at improved brake lines to improve brake pedal feel..

Doesn't matter, you need to tweak booster.

Does your 2004 have a working vacuum boost motor? When they fail you can lose a lot of braking power......

To anyone wondering if the XC90 rear brakes swap is worth it, do it!! The brake performance and brake feel is night and day with the XC90's 308mm rear brakes and larger calipers. Before, it felt as if all the weight was transferred to the front and the steering would feel very heavy. Also, the brakes suffered from fade despite having very decent parts installed - now, it just stops without any drama.

I was lucky to find a wrecked 2005 XC90 that had new pads, rotors, as well as calipers in 9/10 shape (the factory cross hatch pattern still visible on the rotors). Everything bolts up directly with the caliper carrier. I had to cut the XC70's brake shield for clearance but will order new XC90 ones.
