2000 V70 rear spring rubbing on trailing arm

Post by Herb Goltz »

My 2000 v70 normally aspirated base model has started creaking from the rear end, so today I got under the car and found the culprit-- the driver's side rear spring is rubbing on the trailing arm during suspension travel. Has anyone else encountered this before?

The car did have an alignment this spring after front suspension work, but this problem is new. I took a quick look at the spring and its mounts, I couldn't see anything obviously wrong.

Let me know what you think-- thanks!

Only partly familiar with the rear suspension and only with FWD (not AWD) cars, but there is a sort of ball joint where the delta link connects the horizontal arm to the body of the car. Might want to take a close look at that. I am guessing that if you take the weight off of the wheel (possibly both rear wheels) and move things around, you would be able to see or feel any play in the delta link or any bushings. With the weight on the wheels, it might be hard to tell unless it is visually obvious.

Also check for broken mountings on the rear axles. I have had them rot through and the aluminum crack.
