Fuel filler door won't unlock

Post by 93SCMax » Wed Aug 28, 2019 10:54 am

Went to fill-up this morning and the fuel filler door wouldn't unlock. My T5 doesn't have the push button unlock on the dash like the XC70's. I've tried the keyfob and key in driver's side door lock, but no luck. I double checked fuse #8 in the cargo bay (good), and also confirmed that the fuel filler door locking and unlocking relays (RMI20 and RMI21) were good (tried them in the rear wiper circuit). Also, the rear doors lock and unlock normally (RMI20). Before I start tearing the rear cargo bay apart so I can get to the fuel filler door locking/unlocking motor, I wanted to ask if there is anything else I may have missed?

Anyone rebuild/clean/repair one of these motors?

Anyone reuse a junkyard one since new ones are >$130?

Thanks for any input.

If the hinge is getting hinky they can hang up. If it locks there must be a emergency release. Check your owner's manual. June

Thanks June for your response. I'm the original owner with the original Owner's Manual. No manual or emergency release on the 2001 V70 T5. Fuel filler door locking/unlocking is all tied to the central locking system, which works (other than the fuel door).

Are you sure there's no small 'manual' tab at the actuator ? (may look with a flash light) Fcpeuro lists the same part from 2001 on
https://www.fcpeuro.com/products/volvo- ... 56#fitment

Junkyard ones are perfectly OK to try, however this is a common problem so maybe grab a few to try and just return the rest. Usually the problem is at the two small contacts of the motor, they start moving and break loose. www.youtube.com/watch?v=3gAPwre5hoU

Otherwise, may as well completely remove the actuator and leave the door unlocked (if it's safe in your area)

Actuator is behind the cargo bay wall (carpeted), and another baffle. Was hoping to avoid taking it all apart. If/when I do, I'm sure the manual tab will be on it.

Youtube video will also be helpful once I remove the actuator.

FCPEuro sells the part cheaper than a Volvo OEM parts website I originally checked. Ebay has used ones for $25+

I have the same issue periodically with my 01 T5. There is no emergency release and I got tired of pulling the trim panels off for access to free up the actuator. Once it's freed up it works fine for a while but eventually jams again. I ran a wire from the lock rod (I don't remember exactly how I attached it but I think there was an existing hole to thread it through) through the inner trim panel and into the compartment behind the access panel on the inside. A gentle tug rearward on the wire releases the actuator when it jams and won't unlock.

Thanks. The earlier V70's actually had a manual release back there. I guess Volvo implemented a cost savings starting in 2001. Looks like you just added the manual release back. :D

I'll probably look at the current motor, and replace it with a junkyard part if it can't be repaired.

Fuel filler door motor repaired. The most work was disassembling the rear cargo area. 12 volts was getting to the motor when commanded. I disassembled, inspected (no broken gears), then cleaned and lubricated the gears with silicone spray. Once reinstalled, it has functioned properly.

This Youtube video was also very helpful with troubleshooting and repair.

Screen shots of video with relevant pictures. 10 minutes of your life for 20 seconds of information

Good video but the temptation To add fluff is just too great

Two torx screws release lock inside rear quarter panel , lock motor opens and lubricates as shown
