2006 XC90 2.5T AWD / P0089 & P0087

Help, Advice, Owners' Discussion and DIY Tutorials on Volvo XC90s. The XC90 proved to be very popular, and very good for Volvo's sales numbers, since its introduction in model year 2003 (North America).

2006 XC90 2.5T AWD / P0089 & P0087

Post by bfry » Fri Aug 30, 2019 9:04 am

Car for past yearish has been driven local 99% of the time - no highway.

Month ago I need to head upstate - get on highway, as I accelerate to say 60, I feel a slight shudder, maybe misfire? Continue to accelerate through it, set cruise to ~75 and keep feeling a mild shudder. About a minute later, car completely dies and CEL comes on (P0089 & P0087). I pull off on shoulder and restart, get to ~20 and car violently shudders and dies. So I sit with key out of ignition for ~15 mins and then it starts and runs fine - BUT I did not go over ~60 on way back home. Drives around town flawless in meantime, CEL eventually off.

Yesterday, I attempt same upstate trip - car dies again at speed. CEL on, I wait 15 mins and all's well as long as I don't go above 60. Same codes.

So, what's the decision tree here? Obviously trying to avoid dealer - haha. Fuel pump was replaced when timing belt was redone ~110k. Car is now ~167k.

My thinking is to replace fuel pressure sensor first (cheapest)? My question with that though, if I understand from what I read in trying to do some research on this, is that even though P0089 is for the fuel pressure "regulator" which if I understand correctly is basically part of the fuel pump, I should still go ahead and replace the "sensor" which is a different part that is accessible under the hood (where, I have no idea).

Sound right? Thoughts?

Thanks in advance!

Both codes have a faulty fuel pressure sensor (FPS) in common. FPS is on the end of the injector fuel rail and there are a couple "direct fit" alternatives to the pricier Volvo stamped Bosch part.

Went looking for another post and see this one- http://volvospeed.com/vs_forum/topic/15 ... 90-p00193/ , codes are different but symptoms seem similar to yours. It's the 5 cylinder, search can be expanded to most of the P2 line. Think the 03-04 MY vehicles had no sensor on the rail (forget where it lived) but after '05 you'll see it on the end of the rail.

Bunch of folks on this site that do the 5 cylinder for a living and they can probably provide a more accurate view, but on the surface it seems as though fuel pressure sensor replacement might be in order. I would also have a look at the pump control module (PEM), make sure it's not contributing to your problem (P0089/ECM-2900 suggests PEM as possible, in addition to FPS). This is a 2006 so outside mounted, this link has some information for location- https://forums.swedespeed.com/showthrea ... M-Location

Fuel filter replaced when you did the pump?

Thank you ggleavitt for the info. - very helpful.

I ordered the genuine Volvo Fuel Pressure Sensor part (#31272730). Went with the genuine given all the trouble that was seemingly caused by a non-genuine part when I replaced solenoids a while ago (see previous post of mine). Definitely pricer (was $173.40) all in, but again, given past trouble I figured why not.

Part came today - literally took me 5 mins to install. CEL was off when started, idle noticeably better and out on highway for ~30 mins at 80+ and was smooth as silk - it's like it's a new car!

Seems too easy...hahaha.
