Confirming PCV compatibility (850 vs V70)

Post by SonicAdventure » Tue Sep 03, 2019 9:02 am

I bought a PCV kit from FCP for my 98 V70 n/a and installed it 1 year ago. I have since pulled the parts and have them sitting here, hoping to reuse some of all on my 96 850 n/a.

Called FCP this AM about another order, and was talking about the interchangeability of parts from the two sets. They told me the oil breather box is different, the hose combo with the flame trap is different and the hose from the breather to the crankcase is different. Looking at the hoses in my 850 currently vs. the hoses I just pulled from the V70 they look identical.

I don't want to toss the V70 kit being that its only 1 year old and still serviceable. But, I don't want to install these on the 850 if they are not right. Its not an impossible job, but its not a job I'd like to do all that often. Thanks.

Mine '97 have #1271988 pcv box (oil trap 1a)just like s,v70.
But it's late '97 and it seems that EU cars have different setup than U.S cars.
Our (EU) '97 is yours (U.S) '98 since '97 was transitional year from 850 to s,v70 in EU.

It will all fit perfectly, definitely keep them and fully expect to use them all.

Just keep the V70 parts together as a set, don't mix them with your "850" parts. If the one outlet on the oil trap differs, and yes there are two styles, then you need the appropriate short hose to go with each trap. But the 96 and 98 bottom end engine blocks are the same regarding PCV. Bottom line if they look the same, in this case they are the same. No secret voodoo inside these PCV parts.

The turbo and NA manifolds call for different shaped hoses to the top, but you can make those work anyway if you want to. But NA to NA no issue.

@erik - I've googled left and right to try to find different images of the port on the two different oil traps but I cannot locate them.

If I didn't need my car right away, I wouldn't mind taking the 850 parts off, comparing and test fitting, and then ordering anything that doesn't seem like it will fit. But I'd prefer to have all the parts on hand when I do the repair.

The schematic xHeart posted above seems to suggest that there is an oil trap with only one outlet at the top, is that what you are referring to? Or are you talking about the large side or lower port?

Here's an older post with info only (no photos) including part numbers on the two different oil traps, and photos with part numbers for the two differently shaped hoses:
https://www.matthewsvolvosite.com/forum ... p?p=351093

Except for in that link from xHeart, I have never seen an oil trap with only one port on top. Don't worry about that.

I've done a fair bit of mixing and matching of oil traps on different P80 cars. The changing of part numbers is a labyrinth but in your shoes I would be 99% certain those 98 V70 NA parts will fit your 96 850 NA engine.
