transmission help
to make a long story short i am going on my 3rd transmission (if i decide to do it again) in 2 years. could not afford $6k+ for a rebuilt one so i went the junkyard route.
the 1st time was the flashing arrow and second was just slippage. this time it's slipping again.
with the flashing arrow i could turn off the car and wait a few minutes and turn car back on and drive it about 5 feet before it would act up. this time i can turn car off then back on and drive 1/4-1/2 a mile before car acts up. rpms just climb w/ no acceleration.
every time i changed trans i changed out the torque converter and flushed pretty good.
now both trans would act up almost exactly one year from install. again, almost a year to date.
i never did change out the trans computer. should i have? if putting new trans was i suppose to do a relearn procedure or something like that? the reason i ask that (relearn) is because we had a vw at werk that got a newer trans and NEEDED a relearn.
1998 v70 t5 with some bolt-ons. i don't drive it too hard but do spirited runs from time to time.
i can answer more questions in further details as best as i can if need be.
thank you
nico

Re: transmission help
What oil did you use?
How long is one of those old ones supposed to last? Youre buying from the junk yard so i mean i dunno.
The 55-51 55-50 whatever the five speeds are called usually go out around 100 something. Depending on how often the fluid was changed of course. Volvo claimed/claims (?) no service is required but that was/is kind of a weird thing to say.

Re: transmission help
i used dexron 3
vehicle is an automatic and has over 200,xxx miles.
i can't imagine everyone else is going through the same ordeal as i am with transmissions which leads me to believe i must of done something wrong or forgot to do something or i just have super bad luck with transmissions.

Re: transmission help
A used transmission is as old as your car minimal. 99 or 00 the 5 speed replaced the 98 4 speed. So you're rolling the dice on a old used transmission. Maby you should consider getting a shop to rebuild it rather than pouring more money into another used transmission. Junet5lunchbox wrote: ↑Fri Sep 06, 2019 6:17 ami used dexron 3

Re: transmission help
Don't quote me on this but I thought (perhaps incorrectly) that the '99 ran CAN-BUS and that the transmission might not be compatible. Someone please correct me on this if I'm wrong...t5lunchbox wrote: ↑Fri Sep 06, 2019 6:04 pmi payed $1100 (a lot for me) the first time at werk and got the second under warranty through my werk place.

Wisdom requires knowledge as a prerequisite, but knowledge can be developed due to a lack of wisdom.
In order to learn how to fix something, you must first learn how to break it.

Re: transmission help
and opposed to the earlier post: these trannies do NOT necessarily go out around 100k.
my 96R has 200.000 miles on the dirst tranny (knock on wood) as well as my 95 10V with the same mileage. I know quite some people with high mileage 850ies on their first AT.

Re: transmission help
Returning to the original question: I don't think there's anything wrong in particular what you did. Maybe this time try finding a donor car with a running tranny, they can be found dirt cheap depending on where you live. If you go the junkyard route, try to find one out of a wrecked car. Because if it is not wrecked good chances are a motor or tranny problem got it there in the first place.
