2001 V70XC engine turns over, but doesn't start.

Post by Veriwide »

Good evening from North Carolina.

I have a 222K mile 2001 V70xc that I love. I have had it out of service for the last year and a half and am brining it back. I had a headlight issue that kept it from passing inspection. I fixed it a month ago. Now ready to get going.

I performed a lot of service over the past week of evenings. Replaced timing belt, pulleys, water pump, power steering pump and tank, intake, gaskets, pcv system, and injector o-rings.

Once I got everything bolted back up, it started right up. I let it idle while filling the coolant. After about 10 minutes the engine cut off. Since then it will turn over when the key is turned, but it will not catch.

The battery is new. I have performed the battery reset procedure several times. I have seen the Immobilizer warning show, but not every time.

I have gleaned a lot of great information from this forum in the past. Good enough that I have never had to actually start a post to ask for help, but this has me baffled. It wouldn’t be so bad if it were in my driveway, but I borrowed my in-laws garage to do my extensive service, and I know they want to put their car back in there.
I have had this car 10 years, and do the wrench work my self. The closest dealer is a two hour drive and I have never been there.

Your Ideas and queries are welcome and I will respond asap. I’ll be headed back to it in the morning and currently I am out of ideas.

Thanks,

Patrick

Check the battery State of Charge.

It’s sound like an immobilizer fault. Get VIDA up and running And it will tell you where the fault system is but the immobilizer code is pretty damning, the days of troubleshooting without good software ended with P2s, arguably with Late P80s

Checked all vacuum lines today. Pull out a spark plug, and it stumbled trying to start. Put it back, still strong truing to start but no catch. Swapped out complete set of injectors, no change. Tomorrow I’m getting some ether. Got fuel, got spark, now air?
Only thing I can check now is the throttle itself.
Funny that its not throwing me any codes.

Could still be an Immobilizer issue. Cleared out that code with the 5 lock/unlock with the remote.

Immobilizer on these cars is a bit funny. From an electrically cold condition it will allow spark briefly, then inhibit and not spark until electrical cold again, perhaps a 30 minute wait or a battery disconnect and wait

That makes separating immobilizer and ignition faults a pain to diagnose.

Any turn of the key and it snaps to turning over.

It is the same condition no matter the air flow condition; buttoned up, intercooler hose removed, maf unhooked, throttle bare, no difference. Will get some starter spray tomorrow.

Totally at a loss. All the Immobilizer threads I have read doesn’t let the car turn over, and mine is raring to go.

What did they call that color, was it eggplant? Looks good.

I see you said “I have fuel, spark...” and I saw you replaced the injectors etc., but what measure did you take to verify fuel psi at the rail?

Maybe I skipped over it.

I realize it didn’t sit very long, but it could be as simple as being fuel robbed, ie filter being clogged.

Any evidence of mice?

If it fires on ether I’d look at fuel psi/filter.
I’d take a gander at fuel pump/injector fuses & relays also.

Possibly a shot in the dark, but check your cam & crank position wires that may possibly have lost their loom and could be laying on the starter motor. I’ve seen where electrical interference here can prevent the vehicle from firing but will still attempt starting all day.

I did get the fuel pressure under cranking measured this week. 50psi. Will test spark tomorrow.

I had to get my head out of the engine this week, so I replaced my front struts, springs, pads, seats, bearings and end links. Just simple wrenching.

VIDA and Windows 7 laptop (yuck, I’m a Mac guy) will be here early next week.
