Well that makes sense for an electrical layman.

I saw a paragraph that made my smile when Matt said, "It's not just finding the needle in the haystack, but finding which haystack."

Remember when a lever (a leever) on the side of the block made the fuel pump go up and down when the crankshaft turned?

Here's a link to the XeMODex CEM reprogramming. $600. They transfer the data from yours to a remanufactured and updated one.

https://xemodex.com/us/product/central- ... 455-10-22/

From their site:

COMMON COMMUNICATION FAILURES:
Water damage.
Complete loss of communication, where the CEM will not communicate with the rest of the network and the diagnostic tool.
No LIN communication with alternator (ACM).
Starter motor not working, even though start is approved by the immobilizer sequence.
Turn signals not working at all or one side turned on continuously.
Low beams, high beams or fog lights failures.
Horn not working at all.
Wipers not working at all or stuck in high speed.
Fuel pump relay not engaging.

He says it cranks but won't start, which contradicts some of those symptoms above.

Tell him to check the purple wire for a small section of it being "green" with corrosion. It will be within 4-5" of the plug I pictured earlier.

With ours, it would often crank but NOT start. Occasionally while running would shut off. But the crank-no-start was the most prevalent symptom. Check the easiest stuff first = this.

Or wait til he sells it for peanuts & be there to heroically swoop it up & then investigate.
I am resurrecting this thread because my neighbor strolled by to say they are giving this car away. The salvage man will give him $200, he said, and if I want it I can have it for that. It's been sitting all this time since this happened, so of course the battery is probably toast. One flat tire from sitting.

Such a waste - it's a black 2006, just like our Black Betty. Nice tan interior. He said over 150k miles.

So I don't really have time right now to mess with this, and Mrs Bart is NOT in favor of touching it.
But isn't this a 3 or 4 thousand dollar car? I don't want to see him throw it away, and it seems a waste to part it out, especially here with low demand for parts.

If it needs one or two reprogrammed modules and a lot of fussing, it might blow the margin on reselling it.

I told him to get me that mechanic's report on the computers "not talking to one another." I'm really tempted to just go try Pet'e purple wire theory, but of course you need a good battery to even test it. I read a thread here about reconnecting a battery in a long-term dead car with key in position II....is that correct?

Hmm. I have a month to finish a lot of work, do house fixits, and swap a manual transmission into my son's car before he moves.

EDIT - Here's the NADA value on an 06 with 160,000 mi just guessing....

Bart, please please please scoop up this car. 'Twould be foolish not to. If it's too much headache for you to tackle I can come out and help you deal with it and/or bring it back to MN with me. I have a small amount of time left before I return to work (that could change any day now, though).

It is entirely possible that all that it needs is an inspection/repair of the tiny purple wire, and if not that, a possibility that the ECM/TCM needs to be removed, contacts cleaned/lubed, and reinstalled. The ECM/TCM removal tool is $20.

And, YES, when reconnecting the battery, have the key in position II.

so...

1. Battery
2. Purchase VIDA / laptop setup
3. Learn how to use it
4. Wishful thinking on my part and time spent fussing with diagnostics (electrical stuff is my least skilled area)
5. MT is probably not a great market to get a good price (?)

Aren’t you in BZN? Totally good XC70 market

It’s not going to be a cash rich flip, but a path to a good runner.

Use a battery from a running car for diagnostics.
