hood 05 xc-70

Post by Clockboy »

Got a call from the wife telling me she 'tapped' the car in front of her, but luckily there was really no damage. Unfortunately her definition of 'really no damage' was inconsistent with reality. The rear bumper of the jeep must have rode up on the hood and put a dent in the top that twisted and deformed the hood a bit. Grill and top bumper was slightly messed up, but something I'd be able to fix. I'm assuming the hood is trashed and needs replacement. Is there a place to get a replacement? One already painted?

Yes, depending where you are in NY and how far you are willing to drive. Harry's-U-Pull-It, West Hazelton, Pa. is my go to scrap yard. They have three locations, W. Hazelton, Allentown and Pennsburg. West Hazelton tends to have the deepest Volvo inventory. Parts are ridiculously cheap, but as the name implies -- you pull it, i.e., you go harvest the parts yourself.

I got a complete door painted body color for a 2004 XC 70 for $45. The hoods are priced at $41 (w/o hinges) per their price list. Inventory (including color) is listed online, but that doesn't mean the car you want didn't suffer a front end hit that destroyed the hood and they won't go into the yard to check for you.

Erie VoVo in Whitesboro, NY is another possibility. Expect to pay substantially more than Harry's, but the part will arrive shipped to your door.

Harry's is my go to for body panels.

Hood is going to require a helper.

I posted an in-depth review of the Harry's experience on this site a few years back. Everything you want to know to plan a trip to Harry's is in there.

One pair of hands is fine. The hood is pretty lightweight.

Agreed. It’s pretty surprising how light they are. Install & alignment takes 5-10 minutes.

I have a silver one with a nice sized hail dent in the middle of it for $20 on marketplace. Doubt your close enough though.

I’d just get a replacement. I did new washer squirters when I did mine. The ProParts Sweden squirters are more of a stream than a mist, & their trajectories can vary. But are very cheap & at speed work just fine.

I was not thinking weight when I suggested a helper, but rather bulk. Solo, it would be easy to slip and put a sharp corner of a hood through a windshield.

A helper to position this makes it a 10 second snap. A solo install should make a good you tube video.

Why do guys think it's a moral failing to get help on a Job? June, are you out there ? Is it the directions thing again?

😁😁😁

It gets insanely complicated with the neighbor's kids growing and being dispatched to schools, sports, etc all the time... Also I do most of work after like 10 PM when my brain slugs are in the beds, that's a bit late to call for help.

You can try the sight below for a used parts search. Sorting results by distance from your zip code will possibly find what you need without having to deal with shipping:
