1998 V70 AWD bad rear wheel bearing

I'm not sure, I haven't removed AWD axles yet, but cutting is a viable option if you really want/need to remove them. However, the main reason I wouldn't want to do that is those axles are hard to find. That's been reason for me to leave them alone and not use the cup to hold the bearing in place if I remove the diff. Even though I may not need them, someone might.

There is a lot of stuff in the way to try to hack through the axle with a grinder . Also I have visions of cutting through the axle with the grinder and finding the inner end wont come out :roll: , requiring me to pull the knuckle thingie off anyway. When that knuckle comes off I'm looking at $100 worth of bushings and nuts to put it back on. This also would probably force me to do the passenger side right now and I only found one bearing.

Right now I don't even have a vehicle to drive ! For some reason I tore into this while I was in the middle of a clutch and tranny rebuild on my 78 bronco and a frame swap on my pickup. Well I was sent the wrong bronco clutch and waiting on the correct one and the truck is a month long pre winter project.

Up shot is all three vehicles are paperweights inside and in front of my garage. :lol:

I guess I will reassemble the drivers side , order the bearing for the passenger side and revisit this project when at least one of the other vehicles is mobile.

Today is going to be a zero progress day probably , the Collins foundation is in town with all its WW2 planes and I am going down to watch them take off and land :P Probably have to ride my 10 speed to get there . Its out of my price range but for $450 you can fly in a B-17 , b-24 or b-25 . There is also a P-51 mustang there also you can borrow for only $3000 an hour

That sounds pretty cool! That would be a hell of an experience to fly in one of those.

That trans job on the Bronco is still quicker than what my cousin and I have been doing... his Durango has been on jack stands for 3 months as we slowly remove the transmission to replace it. It's been down for about a year now, and he only got to drive it for maybe a month after we swapped the engine that developed a rod knock. He's incredibly lazy and we've only done maybe an hour and a half of actual work over these past 3 months! Hopefully we can get it done soon... I need a tow vehicle for all my project cars!

Do the B17 but bring ear plugs. I can't fathom how those guys did 1 trip in those things, let alone 30. At least of the flak hit you you went up quickly - surrounded by av gas and bombs

There is a 6 inch beam you have to walk to get to the tail - in a pitching, heaving airplane. Fun Fun Fun.

I got the wheel bearing back together and its driving around . I didn't like driving the bearing in but with the axle in there I couldn't get anything to work to press or pull it in , I tried every attachment on my press . If the knuckle was off it would have been easy enough with a ball joint press. I used a brass drift and a hammer until it was flush then finished with some old bronze synchro rings from a mazda 5 speed to finish it . The wheel hub went on ok just pulled it in with the axle nut . I forgot to put the stupid dust shield on and instead of taking the hub back off I was able to bend the shield and chase it around and get it over the flange , it makes me think it might be possible to get the dust shield off without removing the hub.


I didn't have the money to fly I just watched them take off and land. The sign they put up says they have a P40 warhawk added to the squadron this year but I didn't see it. Sometimes a plane has an issue it might hang back at the last airport and come late or fly ahead to the next and wait. The B-17 and B-24 flew 4 times each I guess today , 10 people at a time , the B 25 flew a couple times. , The Mustang was going up and down , $3200 for an hour :shock: . The mustang sounds sweet taking off . The B-17 is very graceful in flight , its a pretty thing in spite of its size , the B-24 lurches off the ground like a dump truck , its built like a dump truck too , strictly function over form. The good year blimp was there trying to hang with the cool kids but didn't get much attention.

I like to look at the mechanicals of the bombers , the engines the turbos and whatnot. Every engine leaks oil in places , I suppose gasket technology was pretty primitive back then . They run a lot more boost than our volvos and I think might have a turbo and supercharger on the same engine or maybe thats the mustang . You can easily see the turbo s on the 4 engine bombers .

worcester is going to have more planes because its close to the home base of the foundation

space is limited, so not 100% sure we can pull out all the planes - but figure on seeing the P-38 Lighting, F6F Hellcat, A-36, Spitfire, Pearl Harbor P-40 - and a couple other surprises. *We will also have the A-1E Skyraider out and will be offering flight experiences. Additional aircraft out mid day both Saturday and Sunday. The one thing we are really looking forward to is meeting all the local WWII veterans.

thats a good question , I never got around to doing the passenger side of this project and I'm still hearing the noise from the rear end on mine. I think I need to cut those axle shafts off.

On a grimmer note , the B-17 I commented above crashed about 2 weeks after I wrote about it and killed about a dozen people :(

Glad no one on the forum was inspired to fly on it and that I decided not to . :roll:

I flew on one in Geneseo NY about 30 years ago. I wonder if it was the same one

bump ! I'm finally ready to to the passenger side I guess . Well I found the passenger side bearing . The rear diff still makes noise I find it very annoying . I don't see any way to get rid of the noise short of removing the axles.

It seems obvious the outer part of the axles has to stay or the wheel will fly off. It also seems as though I will have to cut the axle in the car since pulling it means the knuckle has to move out of the way and will mean money spent on bushings which will be destroyed even though there is nothing wrong with them .


Before I do anything crazy what am I missing? I wish I could put fluid in the rear diff but I dont see how its possible , the fill plug wont budge

This is not as crazy as it sounds but you might be able to get some guidance on drilling a hole into the case and pumping oil in

Have you tried heating the plug with propane ?
