2004, XC90 ECM Error Codes

Post by aktie9 »

Hi there,
Having some issues with our 2004, XC90 3.2L Turbo with 241K miles.

Smelling unburnt gasoline, faintly, and in the front of the car by the engine, not as strong as say a fuel pump in the rear of the car.

Code reader pulled up ECM-3503, ECM-3513, and ECM-3533
Low battery light flashed.

Car is hard starting, rough idle, sounds like it wants to die.

When pressing the gas it runs fine, issues are happening when the foot is off the gas/idling.

Plugs are new, coil packs are replaced from a junkyard model --same exact vehicle and model engine, tranny etc to see if it would solve the issue really quick til parts come in as we had another car have similar symptoms and this solved it. Didn't solve the issues. Still having hard start, rough idle unless gas is pressed.

Fuel pump was changed for the corrected unit, we did it a few years ago when we got the car. Brand new catalyitic converter and o2 sensors. I was thinking this was something with the gasoline but I drove this car yesterday and that's when gas was put in and it ran fine for me and him yesterday. I also thought fuel injectors, he says they look good to him. Ideas.. thoughts things to look at? Thank you for any ideas!

The 3.2L was introduced in 2007. The 2004 6 cylinder is 2.9L.
Code reader pulled up ECM-3503, ECM-3513, and ECM-3533
Misfiring on cylinders 1 and 3.
Two of the junkyard coil packs maybe defective. Switch coil packs (1 with 2) and (3 with 4) see if the Misfires move to 2 & 4.

ECM-3503 = Misfire, at least one cylinder.
ECM-3513 = misfiring cylinder 1.
ECM-3523 = misfiring cylinder 2.
ECM-3533 = misfiring cylinder 3.
ECM-3543 = misfiring cylinder 4.
ECM-3553 = misfiring cylinder 5.
ECM-3563 = misfiring cylinder 6.

Possible source
  • Low fuel level
Repeated cold starting where the engine coolant temperature (ECT) has reached normal operating temperature between starts
Water in the spark plug wells
    Defective spark plug
    Contaminated or incorrect fuel
Poor fuel quality (summer fuel in winter).
    Blocked / leaking injector
    Air leakage
    Blocked crankcase ventilation.
    Damaged VVT-unit.
    Faulty fuel pressure
    Uneven compression
Fault symptoms
  • The malfunction indicator lamp (MIL) flashes
    The engine misfires
The engine is difficult to start
    Deterioration in performance
    Uneven idle
The engine is not firing on all cylinders.

Thank you for your reply. Each coil pack was put in one at a time then the truck was started to make sure they were good or had issues.

Yes, I was tired and posted incorrectly about the turbo. I believe our turbo is 2.5L actually. Fuel was brand new the day before in this vehicle, and the car ran perfectly for me up and down hills and all over the place. I would think it would have shown up sooner. Hubby was halfway to work yesterday when these issues began for him. Somewhere in my reading last night I read something about a corroded battery cable making the car have weird issues, so that's a place we're looking at in a bit also. Thank you again for your ideas. Will post back the solution.

He's pulling the turbo all apart. Apparently, some of the hoses that go from the turbo to the engine and vice versa I assume are falling apart in his hands, so this is one possibility.

I think we figured it out. The turbo inlet hose for the turbo on the bottom is cracked. It's the portion where it couples up that appears to be cracked and not staying attached. We're going to replace it with Part #121445 from IPD since it's silicone and will last longer. If anyone needs this information for the future: my Flickr account has a pic.

IPD even has a video about the part and the replacement part we're using.

Thank you again, Matthews Volvo Site!

One code is gone, now we have two left. ECM 3503 and ECM 3535 is still coming up.
Been working on this intermittently so sorry if this isn't helpful for others as of yet.
Still trying to sort this car.

Yes I was wrong. It is ECM 3533 that is still coming up along with 3503.

Ok so a really late reply on this issue. But in case folks in the future search these codes and have this vehicle I post this update for you.

My XC90 has gone to Volvo dealer of Keene, NH to diagnose it. They called us today to tell us it's the 3rd cylinder and it's scorched inside. Or has a rice grain size of a scorch inside or something scraped off it and flew through the engine. I didn't get the conversation from them, going on what hubby told me after talking to them here. So it sounds like an engine rebuild, or a simpler replace, or replace the vehicle. Replacing the vehicle would be quicker, but I am going to call around a few of the local Volvo guys and see if anyone does engine rebuilds. and can maybe work on it for me.
