Something weird about my 98 S70 N/A manual

Post by Ocelot » Tue Sep 24, 2019 2:59 am

Hey guys,

I hope you're doing well :) So today I got Freya through the yearly inspection. Everything was okay, except for a loose CV-boot which the Volvo-mechanic fixed without asking money. So Freya has passed the inspection, however, there's something weird going on with the axle (I think) on the passengers side. It's not something the car can fail on the inspection, but me and the mechanic were a bit suprised when we saw it. Now that I'm writing this, I'm wondering why I didn't record it on my smartphone  But I'm a good storyteller, and I'm hoping you guys can help me out.

So imagine standing under my S70 while it's sitting on the bridge. You're looking up with the engine at 12 o'clock and the rear wheels at 6 o'clock. A friend is standing next to the front right (passengersside if you will) wheel and gives it a good spin. What you're seeing is the axle slighly wobbling, like an up and down motion, and get this, you see the engine/transmission also wobble at the same frequency as the axle  The whole engine/transmission is moving when you spin the wheel.

History: some weeks ago the inner cv-joint of the previous axle just quit on me. So I got myself a used axle. That axle however, had a bad outer cv-joint so I replaced that cv-joint. Now Freya corners without that bizarre clunking noise.

When you're driving the car, you DO NOT experience any vibration in the steering wheel or the gearshift knob. Not a sound, just nothing. You can accelerate, brake hard, take corners with high speed left and right, the car is quiet.

What can this be? Do you guys have any tips for me? Your time and effort is much apreciated!

the only thing that comes to mind: are the motor mounts shot?

Thanks Clemens and Misha for your responses! A friend of mine also pointed in that direction, so this will be the first thing I´m gonna replace.

Any tips on how to properly check the engine mounts? One way I can think of is putting a block of wood on a jack and lift the engine up a few centimeters and then check for play/damaged bushings e.d. How many does the S70 have? I thought somewhere around three, four mounts.

Using the engine as a reference point

Front mount bolts to subframe near crankshaft pulley

Right hand mount bolts to subframe

Torque rod up top bolts to firewall and top of cam cover

Left engine mount bolts to subframe

Torque rod underneath bolts to subframe

I think there is a pad on the subframe at the rear of the engine and tranmission too.

SUspect items

Front engine mount
Two torque rods

the worst ones are usually the upper mount close to the firewall and the one next to the crank pulley. the fluid filled hydraulic ones are usually pretty tough.
