Can I Switch An ECM?

Post by Oka » Wed Sep 25, 2019 10:14 pm

Can an ECM be switched from one XC to another?
Both are 2001, one is a XC70 while the other is a V70XC.

This device is not a plug-n-play, is it? Since it is a brain in the car, it hold the vehicle's profile, right?

The V70XC has an issue I would like to eliminate its ECM as a possible culprit, so am thinking if I can switch the ECMs just to test the V70.

Thanks

Mechanically , yes, but they are keyed to the VIn, so they car will crank and not start I believe.

Aside from needing to reprogram/pair the ECM to the vehicle, I believe they need to be matched to the same engine/drivetrain configuration (match the Volvo part number on the sticker affixed to the ECM).

Here's where things get hairy: To program a spare used P2 ECM to your car, that spare ECM has to be cleared/wiped to a virgin state while still installed in the original vehicle that it came from before you can plop it into your car and make it work. Which means that doner vehicle has to be in an electrically functional state (at KPII) with a working key/transponder. I doubt any of the ECMs you'll find on ebay have been properly cleared (requires VIDA subscription), and pick and pull type boneyards where they might allow you to connect a charged battery to vehicle + bring your own laptop set up with a current VIDA subscription to wipe the ECM don't keep track of the keys in my experience. It might be possible companies like xemodex have found a way around this restriction (or maybe not!). You'd have to contact them.

If you have a DiCE, we can offer Online Data Transferring Service for your kind of ECM. It is much faster, than you send your ECMs to service for same procedure. You have to buy used ECM same Part number like your original ECM. Also, remember, for remove and install ECM need to use special tool.

Wow, that's more than getting "hairy". I won't even try to go that route.
Thanks for the info.

Recheck what yagger said. You need a dice and a laptop with an internet connection (but don't necessarily need to mess with installing VIDA?): sounds like he knows a way without needing access to the original vehicle/key/transponder.
Yagger if you can confirm the above it'll be nice to know for future reference.

I confirm... ))
Actually, we can program almost any stuff for any Volvo.
But, sometimes, customers can give us not complete information about issue, it can be problem. ))
For example, if follow on:
Can an ECM be switched from one XC to another?
Both are 2001, one is a XC70 while the other is a V70XC.

This device is not a plug-n-play, is it? Since it is a brain in the car, it hold the vehicle's profile, right?
we have to know about reason to do it.
If you can start engine with your original ECU, this means data is Ok and we can transfer this data to another ECM use our online service. In this case used ECM will work like original one.
But, If you cannot start engine with your original ECU, it means there are some other issues, not exactly with ECM only...
But still, we can solve it too. ))
We try to start our own site, but still not enough resources (time). Maybe we have to show site as is, and fill it later. I do not know.
Just for info...

The model designation of XC70 vs V70XC may indicate that one is a 2001MY and the other is 2002MY.

In this case they have different throttle system and different ECM. Bosch part number on ECM MUST be the same for a successful clone service.

My own 2002 XC70 was cloned 2 years ago by Henry (doublebug) and still going strong.
