1997 850 N/A: Squeals, Axle OR Hub Assembly

Post by xHeart »

This past summer was redoing of passenger axle cv boot, both inner and outer. The boots were GKN. There is no issue except squeal since this service when taking a left turn. FWIW viewtopic.php?f=1&t=29716

To help narrow, I had raised the front on jack stands and ran it at slow speed. Steering left to right, end-to-end, did not generate any squeal. But discovered low steering fluid condition and refilled -- the steering system appears fine.

So, the squeal is only when wheels are under load -- turning left would load right wheel. I'm between axle and hub... suspecting time for wheel hub bearing assembly replacement. The hub assembly is Timken/FAG with close to 60,000 miles on it.

Is it axle related OR hub bearing?

wrrr wrrrrr wrrr wrrrr wrrrrr is wheel bearing and will get louder on turning -

clank clank clank clank is CV joint or spider - and you get that on transition from float to drive, not on turning.

Most likely not your problem but my coin here just.

I have myself broken strut bearing which makes annoying sound at low speed turning (parking mostly) time to time.. I did myself mistake it first to be some other bearing because as it is.. a bearing which turns of course too. But as sound comes higher than center of wheel it can't be anything else.
