98 V70R cv joint rebuild

Post by foggydogg » Tue Oct 08, 2019 1:10 pm

Rescued the car from a junkyard - literally. The thing that may have saved it was a timing belt tensioner failure; it was only off a tooth or two when I found it, made a pretty impressive noise when the guy insisted on starting it. Some other maintenance was also deferred.
Finally got the axle out of the car, the stub was un-Godly stuck to the splines, and the ball and cage were likewise. It is original to the car, and untouched. Once enough force was applied, cage, balls and grease went all over the floor. Found all the pieces, cleaned them up, and now I'm trying to figure out which way the cage goes into the stub axle. There are witness marks, unseen and unknowable during the disassembly struggle. I don't have VADIS, so a little help would be appreciated.

I don't what that picture is. :-)

If you're talking about the outer joint, my post below might be of come use. I haven't had to do an inner joint yet.

It's the window area of the cage for the outer CV joint stub axle.

Putting the cage on the inner race and dry fitting it into the stub, there is a difference in depth so I would hate to put the greasy mess back together, then have to rinse and repeat.

I just lost my reply to you but your newest message does indicate a difference fro my experience.

I happened to start my reply with a note about how I thought your original picture (the one I couldn't figure out) was at a totally different scale and that I thought I was looking at something slightly out of focus under your car. I can't even see that anymore now that I know it's a cage.
Much like an optical illusion that you can't un-see once you figure it out. :-)

My joint was violently ripped apart due to an accident and had a lot of debris in it. Therefore I didn't have the luxury of disassembling it with caution either. I had to clean everything really well and I don't recall having any witness marks at all. I thought it was symmetrical and I pretty much just randomly put it into the cup part before putting everything back together.

Maybe I got lucky with my flip of the coin. Also, as I'm writing this up, I have no idea if my joint was OEM volvo or an after market replacement . I'm the second owner of the car and I don't know the full history.

Are those marks cut into the top or bottom of the hole in the cage? I know I didn't have those. the cage holes in my case were smooth all the way around. On yours it looks like you could fee the marks as a depression as you moved your finger around the cage hole. Correct?

Watch this video

go to 1:18 and start watching. You can see some shots of the cage he has and I don't think he the witness marks either. It's not the greatest view though. a few times I thought I caught some cut out in his cage but the more I watched it, the less I did.

you can see he kinda just throws the cage into the cup. That's what I did. But maybe I got lucky.
Unfortunately I don't know

I had trolled the forum before this post, the few strings I found close to this issue were unresolved. Even the vid you included didn't show clearly if the cage had the witness marks; that's a different style axle as well.
I was hoping somebody with VIDA would join the discussion.

Thanks for checking in,

Yeah, I'm sorry I didn't have the information. And it doesn't surprise me that your joint is different.

I'm amazed at how many different variants of parts there have been in the late 90s and early 2000s across seemingly similar cars

I'm sorry I couldn't be more helpful on this.

Ive got two 1998 axles recovered from a parts car but they won't be R axles- which are AWD of course. Im away from the car for a few days though, until next week.
