2003 S60 AWD Overheating, fan a no go and stalling

One ….Overheating . . a month ago, towed home and has been sitting ..
"fixed'' by renewing the fan assembly.
Two......Stalling when warm/hot, gage at 12 noon
Three …..gage not working ?
Four ….. Hunting and stalling during warm up
And, the check engine light is ON ...
The temperature sensor on the thermostat housing is OK .
All four problems caused by one thing ?
Is VIDA affordable ? less than $200 ...

About 85 degrees at the reservoir and near 170 degrees at the upper hose.
This cannot be right, after idling for ten minutes ..
The temp gage is still ''dead''.
The "hunting/near stalling'' stopped after I disconnected the MAF.
Reconnecting it caused the engine to stop.
The K and N air filter(oil soaked-apparently) is gone, to be replaced by a correct dry filter.
I will replace the MAF - they can be cleaned , sometimes ..
Still, smooth running, no stalling when hot.
She did overheat, and I suspect(strongly) that the t-stat is toast .. the gage ? .. never budging .. not working, even with idling for 20 minutes in 65 degrees ambivalent .

2003 S60 AWD 2.5 turbo, 135K miles..
Today , yet another problem... I am in the process of removing the old failed MAF. Its "impossible" to remove the unit from its plastic air-duct (its been clamped tightly for 16 years) ; "Security Torx screws are used, with oversized ''stop pins'''' … I'd have to drill them out ! NO .. NO The vise grips and English bulldog tenacity save the day . I have recently read about the K & N filter that this is a no - no with Volvo..

Our policy is to put year and model as first items in title for search, it also helps people who want to help with relevant information contribute.

The gurus here, for example, know that the CEM Andean control onyour 2003 is different than the later 2005 even though they are both P2 cars

Some of us own more than one Volvo, too.

Your MAF comes out in the housing asa unit, you don’t need to remove security Torx. harbor Freight has the tool though.
