V70R guys - I'm considering a V70R, what should I be wary of and looking for?

V70R guys - I'm considering a V70R, what should I be wary of and looking for?

I'd say I'm pretty comfortable & (intimately?) familiar with the P2 V70's & XC70's.

R's are new to me though. I've only driven 2 or 3 SR's, both manual & 5-speed autos and it was ages ago.

When looking at a M66 V70R, what (in addition to all the usual non-R things) sorts of things should I be looking for?

It seems to be extremely well cared for, but I haven't seen it in person or climbed underneath it or driven it yet.

I have ViDA, but not a fat clue how to use it, so that will not be of use. I will be checking it out via ELM327 best I can.

What I do know about it is the original owner was one of the very first R owners to do the IPD stage one tune, & the car has had a few updates & revisions to that over the years. Intake is stock with the homemade runner that many owners added, sucks air from behind the drivers fog light. Exhaust is stock with the resonator cut out & replaced with pipe.

The only real reason I decided to post this at all was that as these cars age, historical known problems remain but new "issues" tend to present themselves. I couldn't find a recently posted thread on the topic & all the experts here have always been so above & beyond helpful I just figured some new data would help shoppers looking for VR's or SR's.

Ok, so slave cylinder & pressure plate seems to be something to be conscientious of. I have no qualms against removing the M66 if the pressure plate & slave are bad, but how do you know (other than leak or clutch "feel") if they are?

That’s a big plus to buy a well cared for R. My non-scientific view from these pages is that Rs tend to be either cherry or trashed, little in between.

Nothing special about 300HP other than the smile factor; everything is well within the engineered limits for long life. An R with an M66 is just happiness, especially in Sonic Blue or Ruby Red

That's been my exact experience with looking at these over the years as well - nearly perfect or severely had the snot beat out of it. I've come very close to acquiring 2 low mile, nearly perfect VR's & they've been snatched away. The car was owned & maintained by someone who did European delivery, then briefly sold to another chap who owned it a short 3k miles, currently well under 150k.

I even got in contact with the original owner & he was marvelously full of info on how the car was cared for, right down to how he drove it and what his trip lengths typically were. That's a huge thing for me & these cars - short trips = all the spinning & shaking metal stuff under the hood doesn't get hot enough to purge the engine of the gunk & any moisture that creeps in after shut down. PO did oil changes with synthetic Mobil 1 every 3,750 since doing European delivery. He said when he would start the engine, he wouldn't drive it until it was fully warmed up.

Sure wish I had X-Ray vision to take a gander at the condition of the collar sleeve & BG input splines. Oh, he did have a drain plug installed on the BG for easier gear oil changes.

I had some time to look the car over pretty thoroughly.
The exterior & interior are very, very clean. Much more-so after I detailed it.

Here's what I know it needs, and also what I'd encourage other prospective shoppers to look closely for, especially with an M66.

Needs:
Lower control arms (bushings shot)
Front spring seats (& possibly top plates)
Rear (both) 4C struts/shocks blown out & caked with oil & debris (yet no suspension messages in the message center)
Bevel Gear is wet, appears to be coming from passenger (right) side seal
Fuel filter
Haldex filter & AOC oil change
Spark plugs - original owner evidently changed them out extremely regularly & according to his ritual they are "due"
Manual trans oil change (last done at 90k I believe)
Parking brake shoes etc replaced

So I should have well under $1k of parts to buy to make it significantly closer to perfect.
I never expect the seller's "all it needs is a new owner!" type statement to be even remotely close to true.
