1999 T5V70M56 road incident report, misfiring [ bad #2 coil]

Post by abscate » Fri Oct 11, 2019 4:17 am

Preamble, mileage on car 239748

I thought I detected rough running for the last two week at startup and cold idle, but after 60 seconds idle was smooth, so I took no action. I did check #3 plug and found it at 0.032 with some tip wear, and meant to compare it to new, plugs have 24k on them, Volvo OEM style. Coils estimated to be 80k miles, OEM Bosch

Leaving downtown ROCHESTER, two hours after a long drive, I had a missing cylinder, low power, and bad exhaust smell. It cleared after 5 minutes of driving to my next destination. I then headed out 490 towards Buffalo, and the miss returned with a CEL.

The incident

I was able to reach my ObD in the glove box and read codes, and had two...P0352 #2 coil primary failure and #2 misfire P0302

The repair

I pulled over, T25 for cover, M6 for coil screw, spare coil from parts kit, installed and miss cleared. I will test today on the drive home.

Waze told me instead of being 15 minutes early to my next destination, I was now only 8 minutes early. I lost one minute saying hello to the guy who pulled over to help in the first 30 seconds. It’s A Buffalo thing.

Analysis
Relatively early coil failure. I will order a replacement but have to think about replacing other four coils. This same repair on the GW would suck.

I have 5 cheap "don't want to know" brand coils currently running on mine that were made in Japan. I have my orig. 5 as well. Suffice it to say everything checks out at this point. If you ever need one, hit me up.

My daughters were coloring the acorns the other day. Whatever kept them occupied was a good deal =)
Thanks again!

In order to learn how to fix something, you must first learn how to break it.

Love those kids.

Yes, it’s the car that loves me by breaking down on the wide shoulder of I490 on a beautiful fall sunny day with minimal traffic and says “ please put in that spare part you are carrying for me”

Drove from BUF to ITH to ALB with no misfires
