will 0137 code send trans to limp mode?

Post by greg850r » Fri Oct 11, 2019 3:17 pm

My son's 1996 850T wagon came in with the up arrow flashing. It had a P0137 sensor 2 Low Voltage code. I think it threw the code because he ran it without the muffler. He's changing exhaust and cut the muffler out and ran it with nothing but the 3 feet of straight pipe after the cat and has not gotten around to finishing the job  (don't ask). He had reported having no 4th gear but it was shifting 1-3 for him before it went to 3rd only. When I told him to bring it to me, we changed the PNP and did a drain and fill but it didn't change anything.

I just cleared the codes and the flashing arrow went out. It shifted 1-3 normally but would never go into 4. I hit a level stretch at 45mph and backed out of the throttle to try to induce a 3-4 shift and the check engine light came on along with the flashing arrow and it went to 3rd gear only limp mode. So I came home and plugged the scanner in. The check engine light is on but there are no codes.

My question is does anyone know if running open exhaust too long will make the trans limp or is it coincidental? Also, does low voltage at the rear 02 sensor mean it is reading a low signal or that the voltage to it is too low? This one has had other power feed issues related to the inside fuse box connections. Eg: one headlight was out and slamming my fist on top the fusebox made it go on again. I think the bank of spade connectors on the underside of the fuses are oxidized.

I just want to look at every possibility before I open up the front of the trans to check shift solenoids.

I would reconnect the exhaust and see what happens . Cars with 02 sensors require back pressure created by a connected exhaust system to read properly . Not sure if this effects transmission .Good luck .

I finished the exhaust and the 0137 code went away so the rear 02 sensor is happy now.

Every time I drive it all is well until it gets to the top of 3rd gear, then no shift to 4th, arrow begins flashing and it is in limp with third gear only. The check engine light comes on when the arrow starts flashing but there are no codes. Also when I try to erase codes the reader says 'erase failed'. I disconnect the battery and start over and it always shifts normally until it's time for 4th, then it goes to limp.

I did another test where instead of starting out in 'D' I started out with the gearshift in '3' position. When I put in 3 the arrow glows solid as it should and it shifts normally through 1,2,3 and downshifts properly too. Something is causing a fault whenever it calls for overdrive and if I don't allow it to call for 4th it never faults. I guess 4th could be gone in this transmission but I think it would shift and then slip, so I'm inclined to think it is a wiring problem. Does anyone know how it calls for overdrive? That is to say; which wire(s) might be losing connection?

What code reader are you using Greg? You need something that can grab TCM codes, it looks like

I agree. This Harbor freight cheapie needs to be replaced. I also need climate control codes for a different car and intend to make one for that with an LED bulb, switch and 3 wires as soon as I find all the parts in my mess somewhere.

Also, I did open up the valve body cover and bench test all solenoids. All of them work.
