2001 Volvo S40 remove ignition switch .. trying to fix no crank no start

Post by Lincoln612 » Mon Oct 14, 2019 5:25 pm

First off trying to remove old ignition switch.. have all the Philips screws from the bottom.. but I've tried a bunch of bits and can't seem to figure out what are the two top bolts holding it on.. I can't see what the hell they are any help would be appreciated..

This is the first thing I'm replacing due to the car not starting or even cranking over.. for awhile it was just every once in a while.. but now no matter if you let it sit or jump it whatever it does nothing...

Thanks for anything

Which are you trying to replace?
1. The Ignition Switch, which is held on with one bolt and has electrical wires.
2. The lock Pin-tumbler, the part the key goes in.
3. The Column Lock, which is the hunk of metal around the steering, the Ignition Switch on one side and the Pin-tumbler on the other.

Removing the Pin-Tumbler.
1. Turn the ignition key to position 1.
2. Press the lug for the Pin-Tumbler using a 2 mm drift.
3. Remove the Pin-Tumbler by pulling on the key.

Unless they where replace with something else, The two top bolts holding the Column Lock are shear bolts. The heads sheared off when they are tighten.
  • 1. You can drill them out.
    2. Cut a slot in the head and use a screwdriver.
    3. Cut a vertical wall on the head, then use a hammer and chisel to back the bolt out.
    4. Use a Dremel to cut through the lower part. Don't cut the upper part, that part is not supplied with a new Column Lock and must be reused.

Well I got a whole new ignition with a key from the junkyard. I was attempting to remove the whole thing. So yes I'm pretty sure it's the shearbolt's you mention.. (the two top bolts holding the ignition). But maybe I should just try removing the electric switch part and try replacing that..

The first generation S40, Column Locks going defective is a known issue. Describe the issue with the current unit.

If it is: Car will turn on but will not crank over, I can tell you how to do a $10.00 fix that takes about 30 minutes. Been there done that on my 2003 S40. My Column Lock will not go to POS III. Installed a push to start rocker switch in the dash. $10 and was done with it.

#1 Column Lock.
#4 Ignition switch.
#7 Shear bolts.
#8 Pin-Tumbler.

The key turns all the way. When I go to start it the dash lights and everything come on like it's going to start.. then I click it to start and nothing doesn't turn over doesn't do anything..

The car had done this since I got it .. first time I replaced battery a it worked for a year.. then about 6 months it'd last.. now it's to the point where it doesn't want to crank over no matter how long it sits..or no matter what I do

Try this:
1. Remove the screw (#5) on the Ignition switch (#4), leave the switch in the Column Lock (#1).
2. Turn the key on (POS II).
3. Grab the Ignition switch (#4) and turn it clockwise as viewed from the left side.
Does the engine crank and start?

If it does crank and start, the problem is the Column Lock. You will need to replace the Column Lock or do and my $10.00 hack.

If it does not crank and start. The problem is Ignition switch (#4) or something else. I'll walk you through the trouble shooting to pin point the source of the problem.

So I just did what you suggested and took the switch out with the key in then starting it with a flat head screwdriver and nothing. Same thing still is not cranking over.

I've done some research..but it's seems like the whole ignition system from top to bottom is made to have problems.. I was thinking maybe the lead wire for the starter? But where the hell is it even lol..

I also took off just the ignition switch and tried the one I just got and nothing.. I've checked fuses under the hood.. What fuses and relays should I check?
