V70 2002 Right Hand Drive 02 sensor location

Post by EdInfinitum » Tue Oct 15, 2019 6:47 am

Hello,

This is my first Volvo and first post so any advice you can give would be much appreciated.

I have a V70 2002 150k miles Right hand drive with a P0130 Engine code.

(-P0130: O2 Sensor Circuit Bank 1 Sensor 1 (Powertrain, Generic))

I have confirmed with a local mechanic that the front O2 sensor needs replacing.

I have read and watched a few guides about how to replace this myself and it looks sort of doable, however I am having difficulty locating the sensor as all the guides I have found are for left hand drive.

Can anyone advise whether the position is the same?

Please find attached a couple of photos.

Am I right in thinking that photo 1 is the correct connector?
Photo1.png
...and photo 2 is the front O2 sensor?
Photo2.jpeg
(I must admit I am hoping they are as this makes the job a lot easier...)

Thanks!

EDIT: I realised I had my Left and Right mixed up, edited post for clarity...

Thanks for your reply Oragex,

Yes, I watched that video when I was researching and the sensor is in a slightly different position to mine, I am guessing this is because it is Right hand drive (my original post was misleading - had my left and right mixed up  ).

Anyway, I have just received the Haynes manual this morning and it looks like I am indeed looking at the right part - I will try removing it this week.

Thanks again

Put lots of heat with a blow lamp on the metal base a few times, then let cool off. Then let penetrating oil like Kroil, PB Blaster, Liquid Wrench (all tm) for a few days.

There are dedicated tools you can buy if it is really stuck tight. Access there is pretty good though.

Thanks, I have some penetrating oil - if that doesn't work I'll get a blow torch.

Yes it looks pretty easy to get at.

Thanks for your reply

You want to heat it first for a few cycles before the penetrating oil. Even hot, then let it cool for an hour. The expansion contraction helps break the rust , the heat also breaks up the rust. Put oil on when cool.

The real committed way to get that off is cut the wires, then put a six point 22 mm impact socket down ion that and a stiff breaker bar.

That one doesn’t look to bad. I think it will slacken easily

So I tried it after 3 days of morning / nightly penetrating oil soakings and it will not budge.

I have a 22mm socket with a slit for the wires as I wanted to be sure I could get it off first before committing to wrecking the sensor (in case I need to get it to a mechanic after all...)

I have acquired a blowlamp so will try your cycling idea this weekend, thanks for your advice

Yes, Heat first, cool, repeat three times. You can even build a plasticine dam around it and then soak it with penetrant like Kroil, PB, or light oil/ acetone in a pond , after the heat cycling. Don’t use WD40, that is often recommended but isn’t a penetrant.

Well, I heated and cooled it 4 times and tried but... no success.

I have acquired a stiff breaker bar (mine is ratchet) and will try again.

Kroil or PB Blaster are pretty expensive in the UK, so will investigate the light oil / acetone option.

Thanks again

So I drove it home this evening and had a go with the stiff bar and it came off with barely any resistance!

I am so pleased, now I know I can order the part and replace it.

I think the part number is: 8627599, do you guys have a reliable website you use to check part numbers?
