Will start but won't stay running

Post by Jabosborne » Tue Oct 15, 2019 9:59 am

On my way home my Volvo started slowing down and when I pressed the gas it still wouldn't go. Every time since then I've tried starting it but it shuts itself off immediately. If I press the gas to the floor when I start it, it will stay running but it's still not getting any gas.
I'm wondering if anyone else has had similar issues and if so, what the issue ended up being. I tried running the codes but the battery died when pulling it home so I think it reset everything. PLEASE HELP! Any office would be greatly appreciated.

Welcome to the forum.

Start with charging your battery and pulling/sharing any codes...you'll get more response with better info.

I'd recommend, after the battery is charged/replaced, disconnect the electrical connector to the MAF and try to start it. If she starts and idles properly, you may want visit junkyard for a replacement MAF.

Good luck.

The gas pedal is just an electrical switch. Everything on these cars post 1998 is fly by wire, or electric.

A bad battery will mean none of the fly by wire stuff will work right, so you need to confirm you have a good battery before anything else.

First of all, I apologize for giving such little info. This is a 2001 Volvo S60 2.4t. I have been on Google and YouTube trying to figure the problem out. Now that my car is home and I try to start it, it dies and I have to recharge the battery. Because of that it's not reading any codes. I did pull the MAF sensor, but the battery died the 2nd time I tried starting it so I had to hook it back up to the charger. I considered cleaning the throttle body since I had been having issues with it for a few weeks prior to this. I also have a fuel pressure tester to check my fuel pump.

I am just a woman with very little knowledge of these cars and I am trying to wing out the easier, and most definitely cheaper, things first. I can't afford to put it in the shop unless absolutely necessary (i.e. fuel pump) Wish me luck and thank you all so much for responding.

How many miles are on it?

Get the battery charged up first, then we probably can run down some diagnostics.

These cars are complex, intermingled systems. Trying to guess which part is bad from symptoms rarely works.

Do you have basic tools and/or are you comfortable pulling spark plugs, for instance?

Are you charging the battery yourself? Be sure to let the battery fully charge. If you can check voltage after it is charge it should have about 12.5 volts after sitting without charger or load for about an hour. Depending on the charger and condition of your battery, full charging may take several hours. If the battery is old it may never fully charge. I am concerned that the battery is weak if it did not start the car twice. A bad battery will prevent everything from working properly.

I apologize if I am telling you things you know.

I really appreciate the responses. I am afraid the battery could be bad. I am going to purchase a new one and I will get back with you all. If that is the only issue, I would be ecstatic.

Believe it or not, on the last couple battery purchases I’ve found the best deal at the Volvo dealer. Plus you get one with the correct vent.

Update: I am pretty sure the MAF sensor isn't bad because when I unplug it there is no change. I cannot figure out how to get to the throttle body and there aren't many videos on my make and model without being turbo.
I was going to test my fuel pressure but obviously need a schrader valve tool. Not only that, but the guage I have is also too. I'm really hoping someone here has other ideas.
Btw, the miles is at 185+++
