2000 V70 SE stalling P1670, P1615

Post by martynj »

Hello, It's been a while since I've posted but I'm in need of some experienced help. Sorry in advance for the long post.
I've got a 00 V70 base (SE) model with 271K on the clock. A little over a month ago the car started to cut out after driving for about 45 minutes or so. It will start up again and go for a bit but the more you push it the shorter amount of time it will go before cutting out again. When it stalls, as long as I leave the key in position 2, I get the check engine light as well as the ETS and up arrow lights on the dash. I can also hear the fuel pump relay cycling/clicking that will coincide with the ETS light dimming a bit. Pull the codes and I get P1670 as a confirmed code and P1615 as a pending code. If I turn the key to off and/or take it out and check again, no codes!.
P1670 is the antenna ring code and I have replaced that. Basically every time the car has stalled for almost any reason the immobilizer code comes up, so more often than not it is a red herring in my experience.
P1615 is an ECU faulty signal (intermittent or permanent) code.
I was fairly confident that it was an ETM issue and I've had a XemodeX ETM in for the past 170K miles so figured it was probably due for replacement (they sent a new one under warranty) but after installing the new one yesterday the same issue reappeared.
A bad ECU is certainly possible but could that also be a red herring for a bad fuel pump relay? Current relay is about 1.5 years old. I will exchange for a new one since I got it through FCP but not confident that will do it.
Any experience or insight with this issue would be greatly appreciated.

Are you able to drive it with a fuel pressure gauge attached? Sounds like a clogged fuel filter could be a possibility.

Fuel filter is relatively new along with the pump. It’s definitely more of an electrical issue the way it cuts off sharply. Before stalling the dash lights will flash for a split second. It may do this 3 or4 times before actually cutting out completely. Thanks for the suggestion though. Couldn’t hurt to try it. I’ll see if this fuel pump relay does the trick first.

The electrical part the ignition switch lasts about 130k on these cars. You might’ve due for your third one,

How a car “ quits” is a lousy diagnostic, a fuel delivery problem will make the eng8ne stall and flash all the dash lights, pop a misfirecode ( maybe), etc.

I agree, not calling it a diagnostic though More of an observation based on my experience both with this car and previous cars. I’m not ruling anything out. Starting with the relay since they are a known issue and is cheap and easy. Ignition switch is definitely something I’ll look into as well since I’ve never changed that. Thanks for the advice and suggestions.

Oh yeah. Battery and alternator are connected at the starter lug on these cars. Bad cables and connections are good check points too, with your symptom of 2-3x flashing lights before quitting.

That does sound like an electrical fault, agreed.

I think I have a parts car switch for the later version ( VIN break on this part mid 1999) ignition switch and do come down through Bergen frequently

Thanks abscate, I work in Union County (Westfield), if the timing works out I may take you up on that. I'm pretty anxious to get this on the road so I can take the 04 off for a few days or more if needed to do rear suspension and parking breaks. I suspect that the tab on the knuckle (that holds the brake shoes in place) may have broken off as I've heard is a common failure on the P2 wagons. expecting the worst but hoping for the best.ha.

Sent a PM. Looks like it’s stalling in the outbox though. Thanks.
