2000 V70 NA needs a radiator

Post by Herb Goltz »

I noticed some coolant dripping from the right corner of the splash guard this morning-- it looks like it is time to replace the radiator. I am planning on either a Nissens or a Spectra Premium radiator and new upper and lower hoses. It looks like I will also need two of the green retainer clips for the transmission cooler lines too, along with o-rings.

How do you remove these retainer clips? The fittings on the radiator are rusted to oblivion-- I am surprised that they aren't leaking...

Any other tips would be appreciated!

I removed the retainer clip using C clip pliers, it works great.

My V70 needs a radiator as well, planning on getting a Nissen but I'm not sure about aftermarket hoses (anyone knows if Gates hose are any good ? )

Radiators are super easy on these cars. Do yourself a favor and slide out the fan/ shroud assembly as a whole. This has worked well for me.

I use a large screwdriver to spread the clips apart, then you can slide them off.

Good luck.

The clips on the transmission cooler lines I am referring to are the green plastic ones from '99 onward. Do you need a release tool like the Ford quick release fittings on the AC?

Nissens is good. I have three of them.

Be sure to spray the large bolts that hold the radiator in place thoroughly with penetrating oil before and while doing the job. The thread into round nuts (good choice, Volvo) that are tack welded to the radiator support. I have broken off these nuts on occasion, and there are things more fun in life than grinding the bolts off afterwards.

These are even simpler.
Press the tabs on green clip inward (thumb and index finger) and pull the connection outward. It is the connection that needs your strength to pull off, NOT the squeeze on tabs.

Use new set of Volvo o'ring when installing. Check part number.
